CHIEF MINISTER OF MEGHALAYA
Shri. D. D. Lapang started his life as a humble road labourer and through his hard work and strong determination became a School Teacher in which he served for 5 years. Later, he served as a typist in the Assam Civil Secretariat and was promoted to a Lower Division Assistant where he served for 13 years and then served as Sub-Inspector of School for 10 years. In 1958 he was married to Smti.. Amethyst Lynda Jomes Bhah. He has two children, one (L) Daughter and one Son. He began his political career in 1972 by contesting the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Election as an Independent candidate from Nongpoh Legislative Assembly Constituency and won as an MLA. In 1978, he became Minister of State i/c Cooperation, Jails, Education and Civil Defence. From 10.5.1979 to 10.12.1980, became Cabinet Minister i/c Health and Family Welfare, Labour, Information & Public Relations; from 11.12.1980 to 5.1.1981, became Minister i/c Health & Family Welfare, Revenue, Labour & Municipal Administration; from 6.1.1981 to 23.1.1981, became Minister i/c of Health & Family Welfare and Municipal Administration; from 24.1.1981 to 7.5.1981, became Minister i/c of Health & Family Welfare and Revenue. And from 1983 to 1985 became Minister i/c of Planning, Finance, Home, Revenue, Food and Civil Supply; from 15.5.1985 to 20.2.1986, became Minister i/c of Finance (including Taxation), Planning, Evaluation, Home (including Passport) and Revenue; from 21.2.1986 to 3.7.1986, became Minister i/c of Finance (including Taxation), Planning, Evaluation and Home (including Passport) and Revenue; from 4.7.1986 to 23.6.1987, became Minister i/c of Finance (including Taxation), Planning, Evaluation and Home (including Passport); from 6.1.1987 to 17.1.1988, became Minister i/c of Home, Revenue and Excise. And from 1988 to 1990, he became the Deputy Minister i/c of Home; from 1992 to 1993, he became the Chief Minister on February. And from 1993 to 1995, became Chairman of State Planning Board; from 1995 to 1997, became Chairman of the Commission on Resources Mobilization. And from 23.3.1998 to 27.7.1998, became the Leader of congress Legislative Party and Leader of Opposition, Meghalaya Legislative Assembly. On 27.7.1998 to 2003, he was Sworn in as the Deputy Chief Minister. And on 4.3.2003 he was Sworn in as the Chief Minister of Meghalaya. Apart from his political career, Shri. D. D. Lapang is an active social worker and has his membership with different NGOs. In 1979 he was president of Meghalaya State Council of Indo-Soviet Cultural Society, he was also President of Meghalaya State Indo-GDR [German Democratic Republic] Friendship Association; Council Member of All India Peace and Solidarity Organization; Vice-President, National YMCA Council. He was also the founder President of Bhoi Student Association, Meghalaya State Basketball Association, Meghalaya Editors and Publishers Association and the Affiliated State Olympic Association respectively. Shri. D. D. Lapang has also travelled to many foreign countries like USSR, USA, UK, France Switzerland, Germany, Italy and China. He has also represented the YMCA in the Indo-Soviet Friendship Society, Indo-GDR Association, AICC Delegation to China and many through official Programmes. |
