WORLD RED CROSS DAY OBSERVED

Shillong, May 8, 2014: The Indian Red Cross Society, Meghalaya Branch observed the World Red Cross Day 2014 at Raj Bhavan, Shillong today where the Governor of Meghalaya, Dr. K K Paul and also the Vice President of the Society graced the occasion as Chief Guest.

Appreciating the services rendered by the Red Cross Society, Dr. K K Paul called upon the people to extend their cooperation and support to the Red Cross in their quest to serve mankind. Red Cross is a volunteer-led humanitarian organization with a mission to inspire, encourage social services to the people and should have certain element of compulsion so that public at large are aware of the society and its services.

Meghalaya Health Minister, Mr. A L Hek, also the Vice President of the Society stressed on the need to strengthen the spirit of volunteerism among the members especially the youth and to assists the Red Cross in their services. He also called upon the members of the society to work in convergence with line departments like, health, social welfare department and provide better service to the people in times of need.

The Chairman of the Red Cross Society, Mr. W R Marbaning, Retired IPS highlighted the history and significance of Red Cross which was formed to alleviate peoples suffering, enhance their dignity and protecting life from natural disasters. He also informed that the society is preparing to cope up with the vulnerable sections of the society like women, children and disabled and also plan in accordance suitable for the present day situation.

During the programme the Governor distributed certificates to 18 Life Members of the Society and also for Juniors and College level members.

Earlier in the programme the General Secretary, Mrs. A. Swer presented a power point presentation highlighting the yearlong various activities of the society and the launching of the Red Cross Unit in the college level. Officers of various department, members and staff of the society and school children attended the programme.

ORDER UNDER SECTION 144 CR PC

Shillong, May 8, 2014: The District Magistrate, Ri Bhoi District has promulgated an order under section 144 Cr PC prohibiting dumping/ stocking of coal by the roadside along the National Highway-40, Shillong By-pass road and other roads within the district in view of the air and water pollution and inconvenience caused to the motorist and general public.

This order has come into force with immediate effect and will remain in force until further orders.
