LEGAL SERVICES DAY OBSERVED

In observance of Legal Services Day, a day long programme was today held at the Soso Tham Auditorium, Shillong. Organized by the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills District, Shillong in collaboration with the Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority (MSLSA), the programme was inaugurated by the Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills District, Mr. P. Jain amidst the presence of government officials, members of the MSLSA, various NGOs and students.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Jain said that in this day and age people cannot afford legal ignorance. As we are affected by law in every sphere of live, it is necessary for people to understand every aspect of the law and to be aware of their legal rights. Breaking down the term ‘legal services’ into three broad categories, i.e legal awareness, legal aid and out of court settlement, Mr. Jain added that the Lok Adalats are crucial for speedy redressal of cases and therefore urged upon people to opt for this medium to solve their disputes. Stressing that the aim of the programme was to create awareness and educate people about their legal right, he hoped that the participants would take full advantage of the programme.

Mr. D. Wahlang, member of the MSLSA, gave a brief report on the genesis of the Association and also highlighted its various activities as well as achievement over the years.

Earlier, Students of Seng Khasi Lower Primary dressed in the traditional attire of the main tribes inhabiting the State entertained the gathering with a song. Mr. T. Lyngwa, ADC presided over the meeting.

DRIVE AGAINST ILLICIT LIQUOR

In the continuing drive against illicit liquor, the Excise staff of East Khasi Hills District, Shillong conducted raids in restaurants/stalls in town and its outskirts and detected 48 cases and made a seizure of 99.050 liters of i/d liquor and 8.100 liters IMFL during the month of October 2006. In this connection 43 persons were arrested under the Excise Act. This was informed by the Deputy Commissioner (Excise), East Khasi Hills District, Shillong.

FOUNDATION STONE FOR WATER SUPPLY SCHEME

The foundation stone for implementation of a Water Supply Scheme (WSS) was unveiled today at Umrynjah by Mr. P. T. Sawkmie, Co-Chairman, Meghalaya Resource Mobilization Commission who is also the local MLA. The scheme has been sanctioned by the PHE Department at a total cost of Rs.32,02,600/-. The scheme will have a water storage tank of 11,000 litres capacity and 15 platforms in the area. A function was held on the occasion at Umrynjah Community Hall which was chaired by Mr. T. Thangkhiew, Headman of the village.

Speaking on the occasion Mr. Sawkmie informed that the scheme will cater to the need of around 1200 households in the area. He added that with the implementation of the scheme the people of the area will greatly be benefited as the problem of drinking water will be solved. He urged the people to take proper care of the facility provided to them by the government for their own benefit and called upon the cooperation of the people in all matters for the smooth implementation of various schemes in the area. He also informed that the Umrynjah Sub Centre will also be set up in the near future to cater to the medical need of the people.
