ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF MEPA HELD

The Annual General Meeting of Meghalaya Editors & Publishers’ Association (MEPA) was held here today at Shillong Club which was attended by the Honourable Governor of Meghalaya, V Shanmuganathan as the Chief Guest. Addressing the gathering of Editors, Publishers, Journalists and personnel from the media fraternity, the Chief Guest said that the role of media in the modern times cannot be underestimated. He said that media has assumed a foremost importance in governance with so much of power and strength that it should not lose sight of its objectives and responsibilities. The Governor also said that the fundamental objective of Journalism is to serve the people with news, views, comments and information of public interest which should be done in a fair, accurate in unbiased and in decent manner and language keeping in mind the cascading effect media has on society. While saying that Journalism in the state should progress and elevate, the Governor also stressed on the importance of Inspirational Journalism in society today and said that media should build up hope and confidence of the people to help them progress further. Earlier, the Chief Guest also presented awards to different people who have served society with their outstanding services in media. MEPA also elected its new office bearers during the annual meeting. Among others who spoke at the meeting were Guest of Honour, Manas Chaudhuri and Editor of Assam Bani, Dilip Chandan who highlighted the role of vernacular journalism in the North East region and also brought to light the issues faced by journalists.
