NIIT 1ST CONVOCATION HELD

Shillong, June 14, 2011: The 1st convocation of successful candidates under the Meghalaya Government sponsored IT program for unemployed youth in association with NIIT was held today at U Soso Tham Auditorium, Shillong. Meghalaya Chief Minister, Dr. Mukul Sangma grace the occasion as the chief guest in the presence of Information Technology, Minister, Mr. A L Hek, Commissioner & Secretary, IT Department, Mr. D P Wahlang, Regional Manager, ILS East, NIIT Ltd. Mrs. Anindita Das beside others.

It may be mention here that NIIT has 3,800 centres across 29 countries with 3 million students trained in their institute. Altogether 450 students have successfully completed their training in Shillong Centre and many of them are gainfully employed with top notch names in IT sector.

In his speech, Dr. Sangma said that the IT education or training is one of the important sector identified by the Government and it is making its sincere effort in this filed so as to bring economic development and transformation in the State, adding that the youthful demographic profile in our State augurs well for the future in respect of economic development and progress. He further stated that IT can play a vital role in sustaining the democratic ethos of the society of our state and ensuring high levels of transparency and accountability in governance. He also said that having achieved high educational quality index and social infrastructure development, our state is ideally poised to use ICT as a catalyst for all round economic prosperity and social upliftment of its people. Dr. Sangma also asserted that Meghalaya have done extremely well in implementing various National level IT infrastructure project, adding in near future the Government shall have it own state-of-the-art State Data Center and a State Wide Area Network, which will link all government establishment up to the block level. He also state that Meghalaya have an excellent clean and cool environment which coupled with skilled and educated human resource would make our State an ideal destination for IT industry, adding that the State is accordingly shaping its industrial and other incentive policies to attract more business in this sector.

Earlier, Dr. Sangma handed over the certificates to the successful students who have completed their training.

CHIEF MINISTER INAUGURATED THE DIALYSIS UNIT AT H GORDON ROBERTS HOSPITAL

Shillong, 14th June 2011: Meghalaya Chief Minister, Dr Mukul Sangma inaugurated the Dialysis Unit newly installed at Dr H Gordon Roberts Hospital, Shillong on June 14, 2011 in the presence of Dr Friday Lyngdoh, Political Adviser to CM, Mr Paul Lyngdoh, local MLA, Dr Vijay Kumar, CMC Vellore and Rev. H E Marbaniang, Member of the Hospital Managing Committee among others. The inaugural function was presided over by the Medical Superintendent of the Hospital, Dr D D Tariang.

It may be mentioned that Dr H Gordon Roberts Hospital, Shillong was started by the Welsh Missionaries 90 years ago and is one of the oldest hospitals in the North East. Today the hospital is being run by the Khasi Jaintia Presbyterian Assembly which is the sponsoring body. The hospital is equipped with most of the latest technologies relating to health care and with the installation of 4 Dialysis Units, it will boost the health service it renders to the people.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Mukul Sangma said that Dr H Gordon Roberts Hospital is one of the premier health institutions in the State and it has been ceaselessly catering to the health care needs of the people. He said that the Dialysis Unit is a ray of hope for the people especially the less privileged patients who cannot afford to travel outside the State for diagnosis and treatment.

“The Hospital started with a humble beginning and with dedication and commitment, it has grown from strength to strength and it has made substantial contribution towards providing quality health care to the people”, said Dr Mukul while suggesting that the Hospital Authority may also explore the possibility of acquiring funds from the North East Investment Promotion Programme to strengthen their setup.

Dr Sangma also informed that the State Government is committed to provide quality health facilities to the people which are sustainable. He expressed his appreciation on being informed that the hospital is contemplating to start BSc (Nursing) course which he felt that the authorities should also look into the possibility of converting the hospital into a medical institution which will provide the State with sustainable human resource base.

After the inauguration of the Dialysis Unit by Dr Mukul Sangma, Rev O S Mawroh, Moderator of KJP Assembly dedicated the Unit to the hospital. Earlier, Mr Paul Lyngdoh, local MLA launched the website of the hospital.
