DR.MUKUL SANGMA MEETS THE BELGIAN MINISTER OF AGRICULTURE, ENVIRONMENT

Shillong, April 15, 2012: The Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Dr.Mukul Sangma met the Belgian Minister of Agriculture, Environment, Self Employment and Small and Medium Enterprises, Ms. Sabine Laruelle in Brussels, Belgium on 11th April, 2012.

During the discussions, the Chief Minister elaborated on the resources and strengths of Meghalaya and looked at the possibilities of collaboration with the Government of Belgium and the European Union. The European Union follows stringent quality and safety standards in production and use of all commodities, and Meghalaya producers would need to meet the requirements in order to have access to European markets. Meghalaya entrepreneurs would therefore need to integrate their resources and abilities with the latest technological advancements, which the Chief Minister seeks to meet through his visit to Belgium, where he is primarily attending the World Bamboo Congress at Antwerp.

Taking advantage of his presence in Belgium, he intends to explore all avenues to improve the prospects of Meghalaya’s rural population by seeking to open market opportunities for their products through adoption of latest technologies available, which are capable of meeting the necessary quality and safety standards while adding value to the local products/produce of the State, and thereby assist farmers in quality upgradation of these products as well as provide avenues for technology tie-ups for entrepreneurs who intend to produce such commodities which Meghalaya has the capability to export.
