104TH GARO LABOUR CORPS DAY OBSERVED AT TURA

The 104th Anniversary of the Recruit Day Celebration of the 69th Garo Labour Corps Day memorial function which is being held every year since 1919 was observed today with solemnity by placing wreaths here at Lower Babupara, Cenotaph, Tura by the dignitaries present on the occasion. The function was organised by Tura Municipal Board, West Garo Hills.

The Deputy Commissioner, West Garo Hills, Tura Swapnil Tembe, Superintendent of Police West Garo Hills, V S Rathore, Chairman, Tura Municipal Board, J D Sangma, Chief Executive Officer, Tura Municipal Board, Rikse R Marak, other Officials, Senior Citizens and staff of Tura Municipal Board were among others present at the function.

It may be mentioned that this day is specially remembered to mark the safe arrival of the members of the Corps and in fond memory of those who died and performed noble works as recruits of the 69th Garo Labour Corps in France during the First World War. Therefore, as a mark of respect and remembrances of these recruits, the Garo Labour Corps Day was observed in a befitting manner with dignitaries laying floral wreaths on the Cenotaph at Babupara along with Salami and prayers in honour of the departed souls. The salutation was performed by District Police and 2nd MLP Battalion, Goeragre. Two minutes silence was also observed in memory of the departed souls during the function.

Earlier during the function, Assistant Engineer, Tura Municipal Board Cheyziel A Sangma highlighted in brief the significance of Garo Labour Corps Day while Chairman, TMB J D Sangma led the gathering in prayer. The song in Garo Aiao Gisik Ra beani specially composed to remember the Garo Recruits by Bestone D Momin was also presented during the function.
