DEPUTY CM INAUGURATES MLCU'S TURA CAMPUS

Deputy Chief Minister, Dr. Mukul Sangma inaugurated the Tura Campus of Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU) at Tura, West Garo Hills on August 16, 2007. The inaugural function was attended by leading citizens, church leaders, heads of institutions and social service organizations.

Addressing the gathering on the occasion, Dr. Sangma recalled the joint efforts and hard work put in by the State Government and the stakeholders to get legislation passed in the Assembly to open this Christian University alongwith two others in Meghalaya. He also said that the need to reverse the trend of students from the State going outside for higher studies and make Meghalaya a centre of education was the reason that the government had taken the steps to open up self-financed universities in the State. He also assured the MLCU team that no stone would be left unturned in providing help and support to them in making the University a vibrant and one of the leading universities in the country.

Mr. Billykid Sangma, MLA of Tura, also appealed to the faculty and students to take University to the greatest heights and assured of his support to the University whenever required.

Earlier, while highlighting the vision of the University, its Vice Chancellor, Dr. Glenn C. Kharkongor stated that the Tura Campus would be developed into a full fledged campus offering various other under-graduate and post-graduate degrees, research programmes and development projects. The Registrar, Rev. Edwin Kharkongor informed the gathering that classes for the various courses would be held temporarily at Hardinge Theological College (HTC), Tura Christian Hospital and in rented premises.

Executive Chairman, MBOSE & Member, Academic Council, MLCU, Mr. Tony T. C. Marak chaired the inaugural function. General Secretary Garo Baptist Convention Rev. K. C. Marak, Director, Tura Campus, Mr. Bijoy A. Sangma, Principal, HTC Dr. S. R. Marak, Medical Superintendent, Tura Christian Hospital, Dr (Ms) J. N. Marak and Faculty MLCU, Ms. Wandamika Lyngdoh were among others who also spoke on the occasion. After the inauguration, a brief orientation programme was held for the students and their parents.

It may be mentioned that the University was created by Act of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly and started in Shillong in 2006. It is sponsored by the Khasi Jaintia Presbyterian Assembly and the National Lutheran Health and Medical Board. The University is focusing on job oriented courses, which will create and promote entrepreneurship and livelihood. Well qualified young professionals from the local region have been appointed as faculty at the Tura Campus.

The classes at the Tura Campus will commence from August 20, 2007. In the present academic session, B.Sc in Medical Laboratory Technology (B.Sc. MLT), Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA), Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) and Master of Social Work (MSW) courses are being offered. The University has also opened up its campuses in Jowai and Rymbai and will function in the present academic session.

INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATED AT AMLAREM

Together with the rest of the country, Khliehriat Civil Sub-Division celebrates 60 years of India’s Independence with grandeur at the Khliehriat Higher Secondary School playground wherein Parliamentary Secretary, Mr. Shitlang Pale hoisted the National Flag and took the Rashtriya Salute of the 11 marching contingents comprising police personnel and different schools of the Sub-Division.

The highlights of the day included prize distribution to all winners and participants of different competitions and distribution of sweets to children.

DRIVE AGAINST ILLICIT LIQUOR

In its drive against illicit liquor the Excise staff of East Khasi Hills District, Shillong conducted raids in restaurants/stalls in Shillong city and its outskirt during the month of July 2007 and detected 52 cases with a seizure of 75.825 litres of ID liquor and 36.100 litres of IMLF.

46 persons were arrested under the Excise Act.
