NATIONAL PRESS DAY OBSERVED

Along with the rest of the country, National Press Day was also observed here on November 16, 2006 at Shillong Press Club which was supported by the government of Meghalaya through the Information & Public Relations Department. The opening function of the day was inaugurated by Mr. P.S. Dkhar, Director of Information & Public Relations, Government of Meghalaya. The first session of the day began with a panel discussion on the theme “Journalism, Ethics and Society in the present age of Globalization”, the panelist included Mr. W.R. Marbaniang, Director General of Police, Dr. A. Nongkynrih, renowned Sociologist, NEHU, Mr. Manohar Moses, former correspondent, Reuters and Mr. Larsing M, city hotelier and member of Meghalaya Tourism Development Forum.

The second and concluding session of the day was chaired by Mr. A. Som, Commissioner & Secretary, I&PR Department. The Chief Guest on the occasion was Meghalaya Home Minister, Mr. R.G. Lyngdoh. Other who spoke on the occasion was Meghalaya GAD Minister, Mr. P. Tynsong and Mr. D. Laitphlang, President, Shillong Press Club.

Speaking on the occasion Mr. R.G. Lyngdoh urged the media persons to abstain from any form of biased journalism and to maintain neutrality while bringing out their stories. He also suggested for short term training and certificate courses for press persons so that they could improve the quality of their report and so that their newspapers achieve a certain standard.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Tynsong urged the press to bring out facts in their reports and to avoid sensationalism while filing their reports. He expressed his happiness on the development the Press has made in the state as compared to the past decades.
