INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATED ACROSS THE STATE

Together with the rest of the country, 68th Independence Day was celebrated in all the District Headquarters, Sub-Divisions and Administrative Units with great fanfare and grandeur. At Tura, West Garo Hills, Speaker, Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, Mr. A. T. Mondal unfurled the Tricolor and took the Rashtriya Salute of 38 strong marching contingent comprising of State Police, Paramilitary, NCC, Scouts and Guides and school students at the M P Stadium. In the afternoon sports for children including an exhibition football match between Tura veteran and the District Football Association were held.

At Jowai, West Jaintia Hills District, Meghalaya Health & Family Welfare Minister, Mr. A. L. Hek unfurled the National Flag and took the Rashtriya salute of 27 marching contingents comprising of State police, Home Guards, NCC and Guides, school and college students at Jrisalein Playground. The highlights of the day included patriotic songs, dances and concert 'Rock for Freedom' performed by NEXUS Band, Route 44 Band and by the Local artist organized by the District Administration in collaboration with Meghalaya Awareness Society for Communication (MASCOM), Jowai. At Nongpoh, Ri Bhoi District, Dr. D.D. Lapang, Chief Adviser to the Government unfurled the Tricolor and took the salute of the 16 marching contingents comprising of Police, Guides, school students at the NSCA Mini Stadium, Pahamsyiem. The day long programme included songs and cultural dances performed by the students and prize distribution to the winners of march past, Independence Day Run and cultural programme. At Williamnagar, East Garo Hills District, Home Minister, Mrs. Roshan Warjri unfurled the National Flag and took the Rashtriya Salute of the 35 marching contingents comprising of MLP Battalion, Scouts and Guides and school students at Rongrenggre Higher Secondary School playground, Williamnagar. Other highlight of the day includes prize distribution to the winner of the March Past competition, cultural programme, skit, martial arts, games and sports etc.

At Nongstoin Mr. Clement R Marak, Minister for Food Cvil Supplies and Consumer Affairs unfurled the National Flag and took the salute to the 20 marching contingents comprising of Police, NCC, Scouts & Guide and school students at St. Peter’s Higher Secondary School playground. The highlights of the day included cultural programme, football match, distribution of eatables to patients of civil hospital, TB hospital, Green Pastures Home, Pyndengrei , St. Peter’s Orphanage and Wallington Children’s Home. At Baghmara, South Garo Hills District, PWD (R) Minister Mr. S. Dhar unfurled the National Flag and took the salute of the 24 marching contingents from the District Police Force, NCC cadets and school students at District Sports Complex, Baghmara. The day was also marked by the colourful cultural presentation by the school students and the evening programme includes sports for children, Football Match and many others. At Resubelpara, North Garo Hills District, Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister, Prof. R. C. Laloo unfurled the Tri Color and took the Rashtriya salute of the 24 parade contingents comprising of the police, Scouts and Guides and school students in the presence of the Chairman Planning Board, Mr. S C Marak. Others highlight including colorful cultural show, distribution of fruits and eggs to the Resubelpara CHC, children sports and fancy football match between DC XI and DSA XI. The cleanest Markets in the district, namely, Kharkutta Bazar, Bajengdoba Bazar and Thapa Bazar also received the awards from the Chief Guest, for being the first, second and the third respectively.

At Ampati, South West Garo Hills, Meghalaya Social Welfare Minister, Mrs. Deborah C. Marak unfurled the Tricolor and took the Rashtriya Salute of the 20 marching contingents which includes police, school students and Scouts and Guides at Student’s Field, Ampati. Other highlights of the day celebration includes the cultural programme including patriotic songs, dances and skit with social message by ICDS workers, final football match organized by Ampati Youth Welfare Club, exhibition football match and sports and games for children At Mawkyrwat, South West Khasi Hills District, Independence Day was celebrated in a befitting manner at the Maharam Government Secondary School Playground where the Meghalaya Minister for Urban Affairs Dr. Ampareen Lyngdoh unfurled the Tricolor and took the salute of the 24 parade contingents comprising of police, NCC, scouts and guides, college and school students. Other highlights of the day included prize distribution to the winner of March past competition, cultural programmes, sports and games for children.

At Khliehriat, East Jaintia Hills District, Meghalaya Minister for Transport, Mr. H. D. R. Lyngdoh unfurled the National Flag and took the salute of the 20 march past contingents of police and students at Khliehriat Higher Secondary School playground. Cultural items, skits, dances and songs present by students were the other highlights of the Independence Day celebration. At Dadenggre Civil Sub-Division, the Meghalaya Parliamentray Secretary, Home (P) Mr. Winnerson Sangma unfurled the National Flag and took the rashtriya salute of the 12 marching contingents comprising of the police and students. Other highlights of the day included cultural progarmme and sports for children.

At Mairang, Mr. Zenith M Sangma, Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs unfurled the National Flag and took the salute to the 14 marching contingents comprising of Police and school students at Madan Mawlum playground. The highlights included cultural programme and football match At Amlarem Civil Sub-Division, the Meghalaya Parliamentary Secretary, Education, Mr. Justine Dkhar unfurled the Tricolor and took the salute of the 9 parade contingents comprising of school students at an impressive function held at Amlarem LP School playground. The highlight of the day includes cultural programme and songs. At Sohra Civil Sub-Division, the Meghalaya Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism, Mr. K. C. Khyriem unfurled the National Flag and took the rashtriya salute of the marching contingents comprising of the police, NCC and school. Other highlights of the celebration included cultural programme and distribution of gift packages to patients of Sohra CHC and St. John Orphanage, Maraikaphon.

At Patharkhmah Administrative Unit, the Independence Day celebration was graced by the Parliamentary Secretary Horticulture, Mr. R. Syngkon where he unfurled the National flag and took the salute of the 10 marching contingents of police and school students at Government Higher Secondary School playground. Other highlights of the day included cultural programme by the school children and the local residents and ended with the prize distribution. At Mawshynrut Administrative Unit, Mr. Stephenson Mukhim, Parliamentary Secretary Affairs unfurled the National Flag and took the salute to the marching contingents comprising of Police and school students at Riangdo Sports Complex.
