MEETING ON TLC/PLP AND DRM HELD

The Sub-Divisional Officer (C ) Mawkyrwat, Ms. M. War, had convened a meeting on Revitalisation of Total Literacy Campaign (TLC)/Post Literacy Programme (PLP) and Disaster Risk Management Programme on February 18, 2005 at the Conference Room of the SDO (C ) Complex. The meeting was attended by all Sordars, Headmen, Syiem, Myntries, members of local NGOs and the Sub-Divisional Heads of Government Offices located in the Sub-Division.

Also present at the meeting were Mr. E. Kharmalki, ADM, Nongstoin and District Project Officer, District Disaster Management Committee (DDMC) cum-Secretary Lamlynti Literacy Society (LLS), West Khasi Hills, Mr. P. Marbaniang, District Public Relations Officer, Nongstoin and District Nodal Officer. Early Warning System (DDMC)-cum-Convener Publicity Committee LLS and Ms. D. Kharkongor, Assistant Project Officer DDMC, Nongstoin.

After detailed explanation from the officials of the District, the meeting has resolved to immediately set up Village Level Disaster Management teams in all the villages. Initial preparation works in this respect are to be done in collaboration with the Block Development Officers concerned. Further, necessary survey should be taken up in respect of implementation of Total Literacy Campaign/Post Literacy Programmes in those villages which have been left out in the first phase. It may be noted that the LLS West Khasi Hills has earmarked a target of 33,975 illiterates to be covered during the ensuing Revitalisation Programme of TLC & PLP.

The meeting also decided that 15 centres in Mawkyrwat Sub-Division would be identified for imparting training to the Volunteer Teachers of TLC & PLP and also for training the Village Disaster Management teams. Besides, immediate follow-up action will be taken by the authorities concerned to expedite the matter.

OBSERVATION OF YSA IN WEST KHASI HILLS

The District Organising Committee (DOC), West Khasi Hills, under the supervision of the Planning Department, has successfully conducted the observation of the Year of Scientific Awareness (YSA) 2004-2005 in 10 centres of the District. The programmes in these centres were organised by the local NGOs with the financial assistance from the Planning Department.

The YSA kick-started on December 14, 2004 at Pariong village. The remaining programmes were conducted at Markasa on December 16, 2004, Shallang on January 12, 2005, Mawpud on January 19th, Rambrai on January 25th, Risiang on January 27th, Riangdo on January 28th, Umsohpieng on February 3rd, Jakhong on February 10th and Mawkynrum (Mawkaton) on February 15, 2005.

In the programmes, officials from the Department of Soil & Water Conservation, Social Welfare, District Industries Centre, Agriculture, Health and Information & Public Relations imparted lectures and enlightenment on different issues concerning health and sanitation, civic sense, negative impact in excessive use of chemical fertilizers, water and soil management, preservation of biodiversity application of modern technology in agriculture and farming and self employment generation in the village level by encouraging promotion of small and village industries for additional income to the farming communities. Thread bare explanation on the aims and objectives of the celebration was delivered by the District Public Relations Officer who is also the Programme Coordinator of the DOC.

To add colour to the observation, Free Health Check Up Camps and Free Eye Camps were organised in all the sites with the assistance of the District Blindness Control Society (DBCS), West Khasi Hills District. The programmes were further enlivened by Dramas, Skits, Songs, Exhibition and Elocution presented by different NGOs of the villages.

It may be noted that the District Culminating Programme of the celebration will be organised by the DOC during March 2005 at Nongstoin District Headquarters where all 10 local NGOs and their representatives will take part.

OBSERVATION OF YSA IN RI BHOI DISTRICT

The District Planning Officer, Ri Bhoi District, Nongpoh, in collaboration with the State Council of Science Technology & Environment (SCSTE), Shillong, will organise the District Level Culmination Jatha relating to celebration of the Year of Scientific Awareness (YSA), 2004 at the Science Hall, Nongpoh on March 4, 2005 from 10 A.M. onwards. The programme will include songs, skits, drama and presentation of reports relating to YSA by LOCs from each Block/NGOs who are involved in the programme.

It may be mentioned that the observation of the YSA kick started at Mawlasnai on September 21, 2004. The remaining programmes were conducted at Mawhati on September 27, 2004, Umroi on September 30, 2004, Umden on October 5, 2004, Nongpoh on October 6, 2004, Patharkhmah on October 15, 2004, Umsning on October 26, 2004, Bhoirymbong on November 10, 2004, Byrnihat on November 13, 2004 and Saiden on December 20, 2004.

It may be noted that the State Level Culmination Jatha for YSA will be held in Shillong on March 23 and 24, 2005.

DISPLAY OF STOCK AND PRICES OF COMMODITIES INSTRUCTED

The Deputy Commissioner (Supply), East Khasi Hills District, Shillong has instructed that all Petrol Pumps, S.K. Oil Depots, S.K. Oil Retailers, Government Nominees, Fair Price Shop Dealers, L.P.G. Dealers and Open Market Traders dealing in essential commodities should display the stock and prices of commodities in a conspicuous of the shop establishment distinctly visible for interest of the consumers.

Action will be taken against any non compliance of this instruction as per provision of the Meghalaya Schedule Articles (Display & Marking of Prices) Order, 1975.
