CHIEF MINISTER LAYS FOUNDATION STONE FOR SCIENCE AND COMMERCE COLLEGE

Chief Minister, Dr Mukul M Sangma today laid the Foundation Stone for Science & Commerce College at a function held at Sacred Grove, Mawphlang, in the presence of Local MLA and Parliamentary Secretary, Kennedy Khyriem. Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister, Dr Mukul M Sangma said that the establishment of a Science & Commerce College at Mawphlang is the launching of new initiatives in the field of Education and of having a dedicated institution for Science and Commerce in the state. He also said that having such Educational centres in the rural areas will to a large extent control urban migration as there is a trend of students migrating to cities in search of better educational opportunities. He added that having such institutions within the state will reverse the process of flight capital as well. “The whole exercise will have other collateral benefits for the society and the state as a whole,” said the Chief Minister. Dr Sangma also said that the legacy of the state especially Shillong as being the educational hub has not been taken advantage of in the last few years and that there is a need to restore this legacy. The Chief Minister informed that Education is one area in social sector where by taking advantage of the aspirations of the youth for quality education attractive spaces for providing job opportunities can be created. He also informed that Mawphlang has always been partnering with the government in all its developmental programmes and having an educational institution in the beautiful backdrops of Mawphlang will in turn promote Tourism.

Dr Sangma said that the strength of the people of the state who have immense potentialities should not be underestimated. He further said that it is important to generate a sense of hope among the people. He added that Meghalaya is being known for the good things that are happening in the state and the momentum of growth that has been achieved should not be dislocated. The Chief Minister also said that the government is taking care of the issues and the apprehensions of the people with the complete involvement of all stakeholders. It may be mentioned here Hima Mawphlang has donated 20 acres of land for the college. Among others who spoke during the function were Minister, Home etc H D R Lyngdoh, Minister, PWD (R) etc M M Danggo, Minister, PWD (B) etc Dr M Ampareen Lyngdoh and MLA, Mawphlang, Kennedy Khyriem.
