LEGAL LITERACY CAMPAIGN AT MAWSYNRAM

The Office of the Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills District in collaboration with the Meghalaya State Legal Service Authority (MSLSA) organized the Legal Literacy Campaign at St. Francis Xavier Secondary School, Sohklong, Mawsynram, East Khasi Hills District on February 23, 2007. The campaign was organized with an aim to create awareness among the people about the various important legal issues like Pensioners benefit, Consumer Rights, Right to Information, Fundamental Rights and Duties. Large number of people of the area attended the campaign.

The programme included lectures and interactive session which was presided over by Mr. T. Lyngwa, Additional Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills District.

The resource persons on the day included Mr. W. H. D. Syngkon, Additional Advocate General and members of the MSLSA Mr. B. E. Wahlang, Mrs. M. R. Mawlong.

NATIONAL SCIENCE DAY CELEBRATION

As part of the National Science Day Celebration, 2007 the Survey of India, Malki Shillong will organize Exhibition in its office complex on February 28, 2007 from 11.00 am to 4.00 pm. The theme for this year’s National Science Day is “More Crop per drop”.

The exhibition is being organized to generate amongst the stake-holders the importance of informed decision-making on a range of emerging issues of immediate concern to the community. The exhibition will include Modern Surveying Instruments, Computer Aided Cartography (CAC) and Importance of Map in our day to day life. An open day for public in the organisation and Quiz competitions on the subject of Geography and Map reading (for School students) are other activities for the day. Academic and Research Institutions, Public Sector Undertakings, Autonomous Bodies and public from all walks of life are invited to utilize this opportunity offered by the National Science Day.

SECTION 144 CRPC PROMULGATED

The District Magistrate, East Khasi Hills District, Shillong has promulgated an order under Section 144 CrPC prohibiting any person or group of persons from causing obstruction to movement of people and vehicular traffic, the assembly of five or more persons within 200 meters radius of the Mawlai Police Station, Shillong and carrying of arms and other lethal weapons in the whole of East Khasi Hills District with the exception of security forces.

This order comes into force with immediate effect and shall remain in force till further orders.

NOMINATION FOR ASHOKA CHAKRA AWARDS

The Government of India will announce the Ashoka Chakra series of Gallantry Awards on the occasion of Independence Day, 2007. The Awards will be given in three categories namely Ashoka Chakra (awarded for most conspicuous bravery or some act of daring or preminent valour of self service), Kirti Chakra (awarded for conspicuous gallantry) and Shaurya Chakra (awarded for gallantry).

Persons of either sex in walks of life are eligible for these awards. Defence personnel, Members of Police Forces are also eligible for these awards.

For details intending individuals from East Khasi Hills District who desired their names to be recommended to the Government for the Award may contact the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills District.

TOTAL SANITATION CAMPAIGN AT BYRNIHAT

The office of the Block Development Officer, Umling Block, in collaboration with the District Water and Sanitation Committee (DSWC), Ri Bhoi District, organized the Total Sanitation Campaign at Byrnihat on February 23, 2007 wherein Mr. W. L. Mynsong, Deputy Chief Executive Member, KHADC, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Headmen and people from different villages of the area participated in the campaign.

It may be mentioned that the DWSC has sanctioned 10 sanitary latrines for 10 schools, 1 for Anganwadi Centre and 2 communities’ public latrines in the area.

On the day, an exhibition-cum-sale of solar domestic products, mobile van, electric vehicle were demonstrated by the Solar Office, Nongpoh.

RONGHILIK PRESBYTERIAN UP SCHOOL BUILDING INAUGURATED

Dr. D. D. Lapang, Chairman, Meghalaya Economic Development Council inaugurated the newly constructed school building of the Upper Primary School of the Ri Bhoi Synod at Ronghilik, Nongpoh, Ri Bhoi District on February 23, 2007. The building was constructed under SGRY Scheme of Umling C & RD Block at the cost of Rs. 2.00 lakhs.

Stressing on the importance of education in the present world, Dr. Lapang, in his speech, said that teachers plays a vital role in moulding and shaping the overall development of the children and therefore urged upon the teachers to dedicate themselves in providing quality education to the students.

Dr. Lapang also visited Umrong village, Ri Bhoi District on February 24, 2007 to get first hand information on the problems and difficulties faced by the people of the area.
