REPUBLIC DAY CELEBRATED IN THE STATE

Along with the rest of the country, the 58th Republic Day was celebrated in all the District Headquarters, Civil Sub-Divisions and Administrative Units of the State.

At Tura, Meghalaya Speaker, Mr. M. Danggo, unfurled the Tri-Colour, took the Rashtriya Salute and inspected the parade of the marching contingents in a function held at Chandmary playground, West Garo Hills District.

As part of the celebration tableaux were presented, wherein the Medical and Health Department and the P.W.D. Building Division were awarded the 1st and 2nd prize respectively. Special awards, carrying a cash prize of Rs.5000/- and a citation, were given to Mrs. Fridina K. Marak and Dr. R. P. Tariang by the local Celebration Committee. Appreciation Certificates were also presented by the District Administration, to six individuals in recognition of their contribution in their respective fields. The awardees comprised of one IFAD officer, two leaders of Self Help groups, two officers of 114 Bn. and one officer of the CRPF. Cultural show, essay competition, children’s sports and free cinema shows were other attractions of the day.

At Nongstoin, Meghalaya Minister for C&RD, Mrs. Irene Lyngdoh unfurled the Tri-Colour to the tune of the National Anthem and took the Rashtriya Salute at an impressive parade by the police, Scouts and Guides and school contingents at St. Peter’s Higher Secondary School Playground, Nongstoin. Besides the ceremonial parade, tableaux of different departments were also presented on the occasion. In recognition of her act of bravery, Seidalin Mawthyllup, a ten year old girl of Umsaw (Tyllang), who saved her three month old sibling from her burning house, was also felicitated by Mrs. Lyngdoh with two medals, a citation and a cash award of Rs. 30,000/-.

Other highlights of the day included, cultural programmes, distribution of edibles to patients of local hospitals and orphanages.

At Williamnagar, a large umber of people from all walks of life assembled together at the Rongrenggiri playground to witness the celebration, where the Meghalaya Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Mr. E. D. Marak unfurled the National Flag and took the salute at the three parade contingents of the police, Scouts and Guides and school students.

Games and sports for children, tennis ball cricket match for Veteran Officers XI and Veteran Public, Tug of War for women and Indigenous games were organized as part of the celebration. Fruits were also distributed to hospital patients and inmates of District Jail on the day.

PRICES OF ESSENTIAL COMMODITIES

The Director, Food Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, Meghalaya, Shillong has informed that the following are the wholesale price (in quintals/bag/tin) and the retail price (in kg/litre) of essential commodities as on January 24, 2007.

The wholesale price of Rice is Rs. 1080/1150 (Common), Rs. 1130/1200 (Fine) and Rs. 1300/1700 (Packet Parimal) while the retail price per kg is Rs. 12.00 (Common), Rs. 12.50/Rs.13.00 (Fine) and Rs. 14.00/Rs. 18.00 (Packet Parimal). The wholesale price of Atta is Rs. 1220/1240 and Maida is Rs. 1360/1400 and the retail price per kg of Atta is Rs. 15.00/16.00 and Maida is Rs. 17.00. While the wholesale price of Gramdal is Rs. 3300/Rs.3900, the retail price per kg is Rs. 38.00/44.00 per kg. For Turdal, the wholesale price is Rs. 2750/3000 (Ahar), Rs. 2380/Rs. 3000 (Masur) and Rs. 4000/4500 (Moong), and the retail price per kg is Rs. 30.00/Rs. 35.00 (Ahar), Rs. 27.00/Rs. 32.00 (Masur) and Rs. 44.00/Rs. 50.00 (Moong).The wholesale price of Urad (Whole) is Rs.4100/4400 and the retail price is Rs.44.00/46.00. The wholesale price of Urad Dal is Rs.5100/5300 and the retail price is Rs. 54.00/56.00. The wholesale price of Sugar is Rs. 1760/Rs. 1860 per quintal, the retail price is Rs. 20.00/Rs. 21.00 per kg. The wholesale price of Mustard Oil is Rs. 710/Rs. 740 per tin, the retail price is Rs. 57.00/Rs 72.00 per litre. The wholesale price of Vanaspati oil is Rs. 750/Rs. 800 per tin, the retail price is Rs. 54.00/Rs. 62.00 per litre. The wholesale price of Tea is Rs. 100/Rs. 150 (loose) and Rs. 130.00/Rs. 170.00 (packet), the retail price is Rs. 120.00/170.00 (loose) and Rs. 160.00/Rs. 196.00 (packed) per kg. The wholesale price of Potato is Rs. 450/Rs. 650 per bag, the retail price is Rs. 06.00/Rs. 12.00 per kg. The wholesale price of Onion is Rs. 1, 200/Rs. 1,500 per bag, the retail price is Rs. 15.00/Rs. 20.00 per kg. The wholesale price of Salt is Rs. 150/Rs. 190 (loose) and Rs. 160/Rs. 390 (packet), the retail price is Rs. 04.00/Rs. 05.00 per kg (loose) and Rs. 07.00/Rs. 09.00 (packet). The wholesale price of Gur is Rs. 1600/Rs. 1700, the retail price is Rs. 22.00/Rs 26.00 per kg and the wholesale price of Milk (Toned milk) is Rs. 28.50 per litre, the retail price is Rs. 30.00 per litre.

FREE EYE CAMP HELD AT NONGPOH

A one day free eye camp organized by the Nongpoh Block Youth Congress (NBYC) in collaboration with the Bansara Eye Clinic was held on January 27, 2007 at Sajer LP School, Nongpoh, Ri Bhoi District. Chairman, Meghalaya Economic Development Council Dr. D. D. Lapang graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.

In his speech, Dr. Lapang lauded the effort of the NBYC for organizing the eye camp which will benefit the people especially the poor section of the area. He also expressed his gratitude to the Bansara Eye Clinic and its doctors for their support to this noble cause.

Later in the day, Dr. Lapang attended the Get-together of the Catholic Youth Umsning Parish held at Umshor-shor, Ri Bhoi District.

APPLICATION INVITED FOR BVSC AND AH COURSE

The Veterinary Council of India invites applications for Entrance Examination for filling up of 15p.c. of total number of seats from Indian National to be filled on merit in different Colleges for admission into 1st Year B.V.Sc & A.H. Course for the session 2007-2008.

Candidates must attained 17 years on or before 31st December, 2007 and passed HSSLC or its equivalent with Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

Bulletin of information and application form can be obtained by posts from “Veterinary Council of India ‘A’ Wing, 2nd Floor, August Kranti Bhawan, Bhikaji Cama Place, New Delhi – 110066” on payment of Rs. 750/- for General Category and Rs. 400/- for SC/ST Category through a Demand Draft in favour of “Veterinary Council of India” payable at New Delhi along with two plain paper slips with complete address and Pin Code or by Hand or production of the Bank Draft of Rs. 700/- in case of General Category and Rs. 350/- in case of SC/ST Category from the office of the Dean, College of Veterinary Science, Khanapara, Guwahati, Assam on or before 19th February, 2007. Last date of submission of application to the Veterinary Council, New Delhi is on 28th February, 2007.
