8TH BIENNIAL CONFERENCE OF NEEPCO DIPLOMA ENGINEERS ASSOCIATION

Shillong, March 28, 2011: The 8th Biennial Conference of Diploma Engineers Association of the North East Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) was held on March 27, 2011 at Shillong Club, Shillong wherein the Meghalaya Minister Power, etc., Mr. A T Mondal was the Chief Guest. Also present on the occasion were Director (Technical), NEEPCO, Mr. Utpal Moral, senior engineers and officers of the Corporation.

In his speech, Mr. Mondal said that as a central sector power utility since 1976, NEEPCO has been doing a tremendous job in developing the North Eastern Region’s power potential. Stating that the Central Government has shifted its focus to the region for augmentation of power generation, Mr. Mondal said that North Eastern Region is the Power House of India and NEEPCO has a crucial role to play in generating the power capacity of the region. He also informed that the total power potential of the Region was 58000 MW of which most was in Arunachal Pradesh and some in Meghalaya and Mizoram. Therefore he called upon the engineers and officers of the Corporation to find measures to tap the different resources of the region for power generation.

Later, Mr. Mondal released the souvenir of the Association.

HEALTH MELA ORGANIZED AT JAKREM

Shillong, March 28, 2011: In order to provide better health care to the people in the rural areas, the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) through the Office of the District Medical and Health Officer, Nongstoin kickstarted a two day Health Mela at Jakrem village on March 28, 2011, where the Deputy Chief Minister in charge of Health and Family Welfare, Mr Rowell Lyngdoh was the Chief Guest at the inaugural function.

Speaking on the occasion, the Deputy Chief Minister stated that the Health Mela is being organized not only for giving free medical treatment to the people but also to make them aware about different types of sickness. He therefore, called upon the people to take the opportunity of this mela by availing free medical checkup for various diseases where specialist Doctors on different lines are available.

The inaugural meeting was presided over by the District Medical and Health Officer, Nongstoin Dr. Mawshan Lyngdoh and others who spoke on the occasion included the Additional Deputy Commissioner in charge Mawkyrwat Civil Sub-Division Mr K.L.Nongbri, Myntri of Jakrem Mr P.Wahlang and the District Malaria Officer West Khasi Hills, Dr. W.W.Phira.

SENSITIZATION WORKSHOP

Shillong, March 29, 2011: A one- day Workshop on Cluster Development & Design Sensitization Seminar on Strawberry Cluster (NID) was organized by the Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship on March 29, 2011 at Conference Hall, Raitong Building. The objective of the workshop is to orient the prospective stakeholders of cluster development in the state, so that it can evolve a collective effort in cluster development initiative in a participatory manner and also to evolve synergy among various prospective factors for cluster development. The workshop targeted the officials of industries department, banks, financial institution and the line departments of Meghalaya.

Chief Secretary to Government of Meghalaya, Mr. W M S Pariat in his speech lauded the organizers for undertaking steps to bring about awareness about the matter in the State. He further emphasized that Meghalaya being a small state have a potential in achieving higher activities in handloom, handicraft and agriculture sector. Maintaining that most villages do not get the basic requirements, he felt that the different cluster programme strategies adopted by line departments could have a tremendous impact on the economic conditions of the rural people especially the farming community.

Mr. A Som, Commissioner & Secretary, Department of Industries & Commerce, Government of Meghalaya and Dr. C O Rangad, Director of Horticulture, Government of Meghalaya also spoke on the occasion.

Dr. S B Baruah, Head, Centre for Industrial Extension IIE gave a brief presentation about IIE as an organization with its Vision and Mission Primary focused area such as Skill Development Training, EAP & EDP as well as Cluster Development in North East region.

Mr. Charles Tirkey, Design Consultant NID gave presentation on product design.

Mr. B K Sohliya H.D.O also gave a presentation on strawberry activities in Meghalaya.

HOME GUARDS BASIC TRAINING CONCLUDED

Shillong, March 29, 2011: The passing out parade of the Basic training of the Rural Home Guards was held on March 29, 2011 at Mawkyrwat where the Director General of Civil Defence and Home Guard Mr W.R.Marbaniang was the chief guest in presence of the Additional Deputy Commissioner in charge Mawkyrwat Civil Sub-Division Mr K.L.Nongbri.

Sixty six Home Guards volunteers completed their forty days training on various capacity building which included handling of weapons, first aid, rescue during natural calamity, disaster etc.

Speaking on the occasion, the Director General stated that the participation of the local youth in this basic training shown that they have keen interest in helping the society during the calamity. Therefore, he made an appeal to the volunteers to maintain the discipline that they have been trained on.

The chief guest who also took the salute at the parade performed by these Home Guards volunteers also gave certificates to all sixty-six volunteers. Later, these volunteers also performed demonstration on rescue and first aid.
