IBDLP-MEGHALAMP AWARENESS FOR NOKMAS HELD IN TURA

A dialogue cum awareness programme was held on IBDLP and MeghaLAMP during the executive committee meeting of the Nokmas at the office of the Council of Nokmas, headquartered at Tura on 28th July, 2017. The discussion was attended by over sixty Nokmas coming from the 34 units of Council of Nokmas, spread over 5 districts of Garo Hills. Speaking on the occasion, Skylance G. Momin, President of Council of Nokmas, put forward various agendas which is very crucial for Nokmas as local governance is concerned. The core issues like water scarcity, protection of catchment areas, Land Transfer Act, Sixth Schedule, awareness on unscientific jhumming, issues regarding rampant stone quarry concerns etc were discussed during the meeting. It was also informed during the discussion that in the month of November this year, Nokma Conference will be organised which also mark the celebration of golden jubilee of the Council of Nokmas. He also invited for fund raising activity and discussed on souvenirs. Representing IBDLP/MeghaLAMP, V. Valentine Hembrom, District Project Manager, West Garo Hills invited Nokmas for partnership with the government programmes and informed them about various missions under state livelihood flagship programme of IBDLP. He also mentioned the implementation components of MeghaLAMP (Meghalaya Livelihoods Access to Markets Projects) which is an IFAD funded project & Govt. of Meghalaya intervention, wherein food security & NRM, livestock development, products value chain, market linkages and infrastructure development has been given special focus. Mr Valentine, explained on community nurseries, daily ration depots (DR Depots), formation of Integrated Village Cooperative Societies (IVCS), village mini bank, Integrated Natural Resource Management Plan (INRMP), MeghaLAMP- identification of products value chain as per cluster, springshed management and protection of catchment areas etc. wherein Nokmas can have immediate partnership with the programme. He also shared the contact details of all the District Project Managers and office of IBDLP/MeghaLAMP in Garo Hills for stronger partnership. Several information about the interventions was disseminated through pamphlets, handouts and booklets which was given to the Nokmas for indepth knowledge and clarity. The programme ended with a team song facilitated by Council of Nokmas inspiring Nokmas to come together and work in unity towards the development and prosperity of the region.
