FOUNDATION STONE OF SECONDARY SCHOOL AND MINI STADIUM LAID

Dr. D. D. Lapang, Chairman, Meghalaya Economic Development Council (MEDC) and local MLA laid two foundation stones for the construction of the Secondary School and another for the Mini Stadium on January 30, 2007 at Nongjri, Ri Bhoi District. Later he inaugurated three drinking wells and two footpaths of the village.

It may be mentioned that the Mini Stadium would be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs. 37.00 lakhs.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Lapang stressed on the need to bring an all round development to the people by initiating different projects and schemes of the government. Therefore, he called upon the public to maintain peace, tranquility and cooperate with the government for the overall development of the area and the district as a whole.

ANTI LEPROSY DAY OBSERVED

Along with the rest of the world, Anti Leprosy Day was observed on January 30, 2007 by the Ri Bhoi District Leprosy Society, Nongpoh, at the Mawlasnai PHC wherein Mr. S. W. Rymbai, Parliamentary Secretary and local MLA was the Chief Guest and Mr. F. M. Mawphniang, MDC and EM, KHADC was the Guest of Honour.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Rymbai lauded the efforts taken by the Society in organizing the programme to make people aware about the disease and its treatment. Informing that the disease could be eliminated, he urged upon those affected by the disease to come forward and inform the doctors and other para-medical persons. Further, he urged upon the village authorities to take the responsibility of informing the concerned department if there is any occurrence of the disease in their respective areas.

Among others who spoke on the occasion were Mr. F. M. Mawphniang, Guest of Honour, Dr. R. L. Kyndiah, DM & HO, Ri Bhoi District who delivered the introductory speech, Dr. E. Nongkynrih, SM & HO, Bhoirymbong, Dr. P.K. Kharbhih, SM & HO, Mawlasnai, Mr. S. Syiem, Health Educator and Mrs. D. Kharshiing, CHO, Ri Bhoi District who offered the vote of thanks.

As the day coincides with Martyr’s Day, a two minutes silence was also observed in remembrance to those who gave their life in the struggle for India’s freedom.

STATE ATHLETIC MEET 2007

The three day long State Athletic Meet 2007, jointly organized by the Meghalaya Athletic Association and Williamnagar District Sports Association and sponsored by the Directorate of Sports & Youth Affairs was inaugurated today by the Minister of Sports & Youth Affairs, Mr. Paul Lyngdoh at Rongronggre Stadium, Williamnagar.

Altogether eleven contingents from various Districts and Sub-Divisions took part in the Meet which includes Baghmara Sports Association, Mawkyrwat Sports Association, Resu-Belpara Sports Association, Ri Bhoi Sports Association, Nongstoin Sports Association, Shillong Athletic Association, Thadleskein Sports Association, Tura District Sports Association, Western Ri Bhoi Sports Association and Williamnagar District Sports Association.

Speaking on the occasions as the chief guest, Mr. Lyngdoh lauded the organizers for their hard work in organizing the meet. He then called upon the youth to have a will power and determination to achieve the destination while taking part in the events. He also informed that the Sports Centre would be set up in the District headquarter for the benefit of the youth of the State.

Earlier, Mr. M R Synrem, Deputy Commissioner and Co-Chairman of the State Athletic Organizing gave the welcome address which was followed by the speech from Mrs. D C Marak, local MLA who grace the occasion as the guest of honour.

Others who were present on the occasion were Mr. S Sangma, Minister of Fisheries etc, Mr. D T Sangma, local MDC, F D Sangma, DIG, Western Range and Brig. (Retd) W B J Sturgeon.

Later, Mr. Lyngdoh declared the commencement of the Meet which followed by the events of the first day.
