INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION IN SHILLONG

Together with the rest of the country, the 60th Independence Day will be celebrated on August 15, 2006 in Shillong. The celebration will commence at 7:00 A.M. with the hoisting of the National flag in all Government and private institutions, offices and private residential buildings followed by the official celebration at 9:00 A.M at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Polo Grounds, Shillong. There will be free cinema show for children under 14 years of age in local cinema halls from11:00 A.M and distribution of gift and food items by NGOs to hospital patients, disabled persons, orphans, etc at 11:30 A.M.

At the ceremonial parade to be held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Polo Grounds, Shillong, the VIP will unfurl the National flag and inspect the parade. This will be followed by the march past. Other highlights include speech by the VIP and physical display by the Bharat Scouts and Guides.

HOME MINISTER MEET DISTRICT OFFICIALS

To discuss issues relating to the development of the area Meghalaya Home Minister, Mr. R. G. Lyngdoh who arrived at South Garo Hills on August 10, 2006, held meeting with the District Officials of various Government Departments at Baghmara Circuit House on August 11, 2006. After a threadbare discussion on various developmental issues, Mr. Lyngdoh urged the officials to work hard in order to bring development for the people of the area. He also assured to look into the problems faced by the officials so that they can expedite implementing of schemes without any hurdles.

The meeting was presided over by the Deputy Commissioner, South Garo Hills, Mrs. R. D. Marak.

Mr. Lyngdoh was accompanied by the Commissioner of Division and Commissioner & Secretary of Tourism, Mr. P. W. Ingty.

SECTION 144 CRPC PROMULGATED

In view of the 24 hours bandh called by the HNLC commencing from 6.00 PM of August 14, 2006 to August 15, 2006, the Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills District, Shillong has promulgated an order under Section 144 CrPC prohibiting obstruction to movement of people and vehicular traffic, assembly of five or more persons at any public place and carrying of arms and other lethal weapons in the whole of East Khasi Hills District with the exception of security forces.

This order comes into force with immediate effect and will remain in force until further orders.
