THE NORTH EAST TODAY ONLINE PORTAL LAUNCHED

Meghalaya Governor, Mr. M. M. Jacob launched the Online Portal of The North East Today (TNT) at the Royal Heritage Tripura Castle, Shillong on January 23, 2007 in the presence of Meghalaya Home Minister, Mr. R. G. Lyngdoh.

Speaking as the Chief Guest at the inaugural function, Mr. Jacob stressed on the need to project news in a right manner. Stating that people from the mainland India are ignorant about north east region adding that what happens in the region will go to the national attention only when there is disaster or bomb blast etc, Mr. Jacob said that a correct perception about the area should be projected. He also urged upon the fourth estate of the society to spend more time on construction than destruction. He then expressed hope that this newspaper which will go to the market in March, 2007 will maintain unity and integrity of the nation.

Underlining that there should not be a space for yellow journalism, Mr. R. G. Lyngdoh in his speech as the guest of honour stressed on the need to project news in a real and fair manner. He hoped that with the launching of North East Today, rest of the country will be able to read the positive stories of the north east region.

It may be mentioned that The North East Today (TNT) is a newspaper which will be launched to educate, inform and entertain maintaining a high level of professionalism. The promoters of the newspaper were the respectable Manikya family, hereditary rulers of Tripura Kingdom for several centuries. The Editor-in-Chief, Mr. Moses Manoharan, who served around the world with distinction in the international news organisation, Reuters will be assisted by the best local talents assembled and spearheaded by Mr. David Laitphlang, President Meghalaya Journalist Association, Shillong Press Club.

SECTION 144 CRPC PROMULGATED

The District Magistrate, East Khasi Hills District, Shillong has promulgated an order under Section 144 CrPC in the whole District, prohibiting any person or group of persons from causing obstruction to movement of people and vehicular traffic, assembly of five or more persons at any public place for the purpose of causing obstruction to movement of people and vehicular traffic and carrying of arms and other lethal weapons.

This order will come into force with immediate effect and remain in force until further orders.
