INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR OLDER PEOPLE OBSERVED

Shillong, October 01, 2012: Along with the rest of the world, International Day for Older Persons was observed at Seng Khasi Hall, Khlieh Shnong, Mawsynram on October 1, 2012. The function was organized by the District Social Welfare Office, Shillong and Mr. P. N. Syiem, Chief Executive Member, KHADC who is also the local MLA graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. The programme saw a turnout of more than hundred old people from Mawsynram area.

Mr. P. N. Syiem while addressing the function said that older persons can always serve as a guiding force and source of inspirations for the young and the new generations in their day to day strides. He urged the younger generation to look after their parents and to maintain the ancestral customs by giving due recognition and respect to the older people who have contributed to the betterment of the present generation.

Others speakers included Dr. L. Sawian, District Medical and Health Officer, East Khasi Hills, Smti. I. Tariang, District Social Welfare Officer, East Khasi Hills, Smti K. Marbaniang, District Programme Officer, ICDS, East Khasi Hills, presided over the function and Smti S. M. Bang, CDPO, Mawsynram C&RD Block offered the vote of thanks.

Others highlight of the programme includes felicitation of two centenarian Smti. Wir Sawkmie of Mawspong village and Smti. Phren Wahlang of Mawsynram village by the Chief Guest. Wheel chairs, hearing aids, white canes to the ailing persons and gift hampers to all the participants were also distributed by the Chief Guest. Song and short play was also presented during the programme by the students of St. Fernando Secondary School. Sawsymper and JNV, Mawsynram.

Earlier in a day, a free Medical Health Check up was conducted at Seng Khasi Hall, Khlieh Shnong, Mawsynram in collaboration with the District and State Resource Centre, Civil Hospital, Shillong.
