LAUNCHING OF SWACHH BHARAT MISSION

Governor of Meghalaya Dr. K. K. Paul administers the Cleanliness Pledge during the launching of the Swachh Bharat mission, a cleanliness drive across the State on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti on 2nd October, 2014 at Polo ground, Parking Lot, Shillong.

The programme was organized by the State Government which was attended by Smti R. Warjri, Home Minister, Mr. A. L. Hek, Health & I&PR, Minister, Dr. Ampareen Lyngdoh, Urban Affairs Minister, Mr Brigady Marak, Parliamentary Secretary, Mr. P. B.O. Warjri, Chief Secretary, Mr. B. K.Dev Varma and Mr. K. S. Kropha, Additional Chief Secretaries, others high official of the State Government, public and school students.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Paul said that Mahatma Gandhi has given us freedom and honour and needs to remain eternally grateful to him. The entire world knows him as the apostle of peace and non violence and therefore, today is also observed as the ‘International Day of Non Violence’ he added. Mahatma Gandhi entire life has been a model for all of us and his action has a lesson for the entire nation and whenever Gandhi’s faced a crisis in life he took it up as a challenge and ultimately came out stronger because he took up the path of righteousness stated Dr. Paul.

Dr. Paul said that entire environment movement has a deep imprint of Gandhi’s legacy and his defence of community rights against individual encroachment, moral call for restraints in consumption, his political techniques of satyagraha and his emphasis on constructive work have been taken forward by those working in the realm of social forestry, water management, sustainable energy and organic agriculture. Dr. Paul also urges all the citizens of the State to join the campaign to make clean and green environment.

The highlights of the day include presentation of certificates for Green volunteers under the Mission Green to 44 youths who have shown exemplary performance to make clean and green Meghalaya, distribution of prizes to the winners of Swachh Bharat Run organised by the Sport and Youth Affairs Department followed by planting of tree saplings by the Governor and others dignitaries around the Jawaharlal Nehru Sports Complex.

The winners of Swachh Bharat Run under 16 years boys are Shynsharlang Wahlang, Bating Star Kharjarin and Marso Kyndait who bagged the first, second and third prize respectively. In the girls section the first prize goes to Laenbok Ramsiej, second to Evamary Ramsiej and third prize to Waleisha Ramsiej.

In the 16-35 years male category the first prize bagged by Maikhel Singh Ramsiej, Second prize by Jomsing Star Ramsiej and third prize bagged by Tomy Shylla. The first prize in the female section goes to Kyntimon Marwein, second prize to Darishisha Iangjuh and third prize goes to Dateibankynmaw Marwein. In the above 35 years male category the first prize goes to Talantding Wahlang, Second prize goes to Badonsing Tham and third prize goes to Gearal Pde.
