REVIEW MEETING ON FREQUENT LANDSLIDES AT NH40

The Chief Minister, Dr. Mukul Sangma today the 8th October, 2014 at 3:30 PM reviewed the problem of frequent landslides at NH-40 (Jorabat-Barapani) with the official of PWD, NHAI and the Concessionaire of 4-laning of Jorabat Barapani Section of NH-40. The Deputy Commissioner Ri-Bhoi District was also present in the meeting. The Chief Minister has expressed his concerned about the lost of life and properties during the land slide that occurred at Umling on the evening of 5th October, 2014. In view of the above he has directed the Chief General Manager, NHAI that wherever earth cutting has been done, they must take necessary steps for slope stabilization by adopting appropriate bench cutting etc. Expert should be consulted in this regard and additional land should be acquired as per requirement for slope stabilisation to avoid frequent landslides. He also directed NHAI to make provisions for pedestrian crossing at thickly populated inhabited areas in view of the 4-laning of NH-40. Besides the above, the Chief Minister has stated that he will take up the matter with Ministry of Road Transport and Highways regarding stabilization of steep hills slope in road construction in the State.

He also emphasized the need to complete the project at the earliest.
