Shillong, April 13, 2011: The Directorate of Sports & Youth Affairs, Government of Meghalaya has invites for the Nomination of National Awards for Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, Dhyanchand Award fir Life Time Achievement in Sports & Games, Arjuna Award, Dronacharya Award and Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Purushkar.

Eligible person may apply in the prescribed form by enclosing their Bio-data and a brief note on the achievement recorded by them along with documents supporting their claim. SECTION 144 CR.P.C PROMULGATED

Shillong, April 13, 2011: The District Magistrate, East Khasi Hills District, Shillong has promulgated an order under section 144 Cr. P.C prohibiting parking of vehicles, particularly trucks on both sides of the NH 40 and NH 44 within East Khasi Hills District, which is the main caused of traffic jam an immense hardships to passengers travelling as well as other vehicles on both the National Highways.

This order comes into force with immediate effect and shall remain in force until further order.

SEMINAR ON HEALTH AWARENESS AND YOUTH EMPOWERMENT

Shillong,April 13, 2011: ICFAI University in collaboration with Department of Health Services, Government of Meghalaya and Doordarshan Kendra, Tura organized a day long seminar on Health Awareness and Youth Empowerment. Issues such as ill effects of tobacco, alcohol, drug abuse and AIDS were discussed at the seminar. The Pro-Vice Chancellor, NEHU Tura Campus, Prof. Eugene Thomas grace the occasion as the chief guest in the presence of the Deputy Commissioner, West Garo Hills, Tura, Mr. Sanjay Goyal, Pro-Vice Chancellor, ICFAI, Dr. Milton S Sangma, DM&HO, West Garo Hills, Dr. M K Marak beside others.

In his address the Chief Guest, Prof. Eugene Thomas said that estimates of adult prevalence of HIV have fallen over the years and Meghalaya is in the bottom category in the North Eastern states. Though HIV in North East occurs through drug abuse HIV through sexual transmission is also on the rise. He said that the vulnerable states were Manipur, Nagaland, Assam and Meghalaya.

Deputy Commissioner, West Garo Hills, Tura, Mr. Sanjay Goyal, in his speech said that the issues of alcoholism and drug abuse were important and critical for the development of the society. He observed that the common sight in the region is alcoholism and smoking. He urged the students to take the movement forward and help the affected to rehabilitate and get back into the society.

Earlier, Pro-VC, ICFAI, Dr. Milton S Sangma welcomed the gathering, while the DM&HO, West Garo Hills, Dr. M. K. Marak gave the introductory address.

Later, a Signature Campaign to spread awareness on ill-effects of alcohol, drug abuse and AIDS was held as part of the seminar.

The seminar was attended by a large number of students from different schools and senior citizens.
