NATIONAL BOTANICAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE INAUGURATED

Shillong, December 14, 2012: The Meghalaya Forest and Environment Minister Mr. Prestone Tynsong inaugurated the National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI), Shillong Centre at Bio-Resources Development Centre (BRDC) Campus, Upper Shillong on 14th December 2012. The programme was organized by NBRI in collaboration with BRDC and Meghalaya Basin Development Authority (MBDA).

While addressing the gathering Mr. Prestone Tynsong said that the state government is attempting to partner with different institutions and organizations which are being conceptualized with the agreement of NBRI and CISR. The partnership agreement will be able to meet the aspirations of the people of the state, he added.

Mr Tynsong also highlighted that this centre would upgrade the quality in terms of technology, human resources development and also provides sustainable agriculture, balanced bio-diversity which will improve and uplift the present socio-economic condition of the people of the state.

Mr. W M S Pariat, Meghalaya Chief Secretary hoped that the strategy will bring forward the synergy and utility to the farmers of the area particularly in the field of agriculture and horticulture which ultimately will benefit the people of the state.

Dr. C S Nautiyal, Director, CISR-NBRI, Lucknow, U P spoke about the immense potential in the state of Meghalaya for crops like ginger, potato and vegetables and also for commercial plants like geranium which is used for making perfumes. He asserted that the production of these crops can be increased which will help in increasing the economy of the state.

Others present on the occasion are Mr. Ronnie V Lyngdoh, Local MLA and Chairman MTDC, Mr. S Dhar, Parliamentary Secretary, Mr. R M Mishra, Principal Secretary, Planning, Officers of different departments, and Rangbah Shong of the area.
