NATIONAL PRESS DAY OBSERVED

Shillong 16 November, 2010: Along with the rest of the country, Shillong Press Club observed the National Press Day on the 16th November at the Shillong Press Club.

Dr Mukul Sangma, Chief Minister, Meghalaya graced the occasion as Chief Guest and other dignitaries include Shri P. B. Warjri, Additional Chief Secretary, Shri Manas Chowdhury, MLA, Shri Paul Lyngdoh, MLA, Shri David Laitphlang, President, Shillong Press Club, journalists and many others.

Speaking in the occasion Dr. Mukul Sangma, lauded the vibrant media in Meghalaya and call upon the media fraternity to be more pro-active in their approach to news.

Shri P. B. Warjri, during his lecture on ‘Media as Facilitation for Development’ highlighted the need for the journalist to create awareness among the people. Referring to the disparity between the rich and the poor he stated that people’s participation is the key to development. He further stated awareness through media was necessary for this.

Paul Lyngdoh said more than maintaining an anti-establishment mode, the media has the duty to pro-actively engage people in the development. He further stated “there is a tremendous power in your disposal, but there is also a responsibility in this power.”

The event was presided by Shri David Laitphlang and concluded with a vote of thanks by Shri Joe Thangkiew, a senior journalist.
