3RD CONVOCATION OF NIT MEGHALAYA HELD

65 Under Graduate students and 43 Post Graduate students were conferred Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech) and Master of Technology (M. Tech) degrees respectively in the three branches of Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering and Electrical Engineering at the 3rd Convocation Ceremony of the National Institute of Technology, Meghalaya held at U Soso Tham Auditorium in the city today. The Convocation Ceremony was attended by Meghalaya Governor, V. Shanmuganathan as Chief Guest while Prof. Gautam Barua, former Director, IIT Guwahati was Guest of Honour at the programme. ‘There are enormous challenges and opportunities waiting for you in the whole world. It is for you to face these challenges and work with unwavering dedication to make your contribution to the human society’ said the Governor while congratulating the successful graduates during his Convocation Address. ‘Graduation Day is an important day in the life of a student. It is the moment of taking crucial life decisions’ he said while also calling on the graduates to compliment their degree with the possession of a sound body and mind. ‘Discipline your mind because a trained, disciplined and focussed mind can take you to the heights of success’ he further said also stressing that they must be sharp on intellect by being precise and exact in their career and life dealings in future. Citing contemporary Indian origin American achievers like Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella, Google Inc CEO, Sundar Pichai, Astronaut, Kalpana Chawla and others, the Governor urged upon the young graduates to prove their worth as engineers. He also appealed to the graduates to assume social responsibility while reminding them of the numerous problems afflicting India today. Many destitutes do not enjoy a square meal, states like Meghalaya have the problem of single mothers. There is corruption and dowry related problems among other issues in the country’ he said while calling upon the graduates to refuse bribes and to set up a model based on which they can work to help the poor and the needy in the country. Prof. Gautam Barua meanwhile stated that with confidence in their abilities, students shall do well wherever they go.” Be bold and take chances” he said, while urging upon the graduates to be honest, sincere and sympathetic in all their actions. It may be mentioned that NIT Meghalaya has been ranked highly under the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) instituted by the Ministry of Human Resource Development this year. It secured the 57th position among 1438 engineering institutions in the country. It topped the 11 new NITs and came 15th among the 31 NITs in the country, positioning itself above several of the old and established ones.
