PROPOSAL TO SET UP A UNIVERSITY WITH HIGH QUALITY STUDY IN MEGHALAYA

Shillong, 21 July, 2010: Dr. D. D. Lapang, Chief Adviser to the Government of Meghalaya met Professor Ken Gnanakan, Chancellor, William Carey University, Shillong, Professor Alok K. Banerjee, Vice Chancellor, University of Kalyani, West Bengal, Professor C. Nunthara, Vice Chancellor, William Carey University, Shillong, A. Zulfi, Director, Grace City, Teachers and other dignitaries at his residence today the 21st July 2010 to discuss matters in relation to the introduction of The William Carey University Act, 2005 (Act No 13 of 2005) of 3rd July 2005 of the Gazette of Meghalaya, authorizing the establishment of a University with emphasis on providing high quality study and research sponsored by the ACTS Academy of Higher Education, Bangalore.

The Governor of Meghalaya has already accorded sanction for the establishment of the University with a special focus on Information Technology, Tourism, Food production and Fruit Processing. This is a joint venture of various universities and agency which includes Grace City Technologies Private Limited, a company based in Shillong, William Carey University, Shillong, University of Kalyani, West Bengal and North East India Harvest Network.

The team with the support of the Government seeks to extend their hand to boost professional entrepreneurs, empower people, and transform lives through educational programs and trainings. The program focuses on rural economy with Ri-Bhoi as the center of attention. Such programmes will benefit the unemployed youth of the region.

Speaking in the meeting, Dr. D. D. Lapang stated that such a project is the need of the hour to solve the problem of unemployment and minimize unproductive action of the youth who indulge in activities unwanted by the society. This program will prove beneficial not only in the increase of food products to meet the needs of the State but to be able to export them as well. Dr. D.D. Lapang has assured to extend all possible help and support to the Agency.
