CONSUMER RIGHTS DAY WAS OBSERVED

With view to generate awareness amongst the public about the importance of rights, Consumer Rights Day was observed on March 19, 2009, at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, Jowai in which the President of the District Forum, Jaintia Hills District, who is at the same time the Deputy Commissioner of Jaintia Hills District, Mr. Sanjay Goyal was the Chief-Guest and Mrs. VS Phawa, EAC Jowai as the Chairperson.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Goyal said that the day is celebrated every year throughout the world. The Government of India has implemented the Consumer Act with a view to enable people to lodge their complaints against exploitation by some unscrupulous traders. At the same time, the programme was held with a view to create awareness amongst the masses against the inefficiencies of service providers, defectives in materials and expired materials by some agencies. He therefore informed the people of their rights and to have their problems redressed by filing their complaints to the District Forum in which the Deputy Commissioner is the President. He therefore urged upon people to co-operate and bring such abuse or complaints to the Consumer Dispute Redressal Forum.

Dr. B Plain, District Veterinary Officer Jowai, Shri. C Lhuid, District Mission Co-ordinator, SSA, Jowai, Smt. L Laloo, President, Joint Women Welfare Association Shri SK Lato, Non-Official member District Forum and Rev. HH Mohrmen, Freelance Journalist were amongst others who spoke on the occasion.

The other highlight of the day was Skit performance by different school followed by a song presented by Smt. Arunima Nonglamin.

WITHHOLDING OF FI CARDS PROHIBITED

The Deputy Commissioner, Supply, East Khasi Hills District, has directed all Fair Price Shop Dealers, especially in the rural areas, to abstain from keeping the Family Identity Card, (be it APL, BPL & AAY) with them, on the pretext of safe custody. As this is a violation of law, the Fair Price shop dealers are required to return to the Family Identity Card to the rightful owners, failing which legal action will be taken against them.

RICE DISTRIBUTED

The Deputy Commissioner, Supply, East Khasi Hills Shillong has informed that APL, BPL and AAY Quota of rice for the month of February 2009 is being distributed to the consumers through respective Fair Price Shops.

The APL Quota is Rs. 8.80 to Rs. 9.00 maximum per kg @ 1.500 gms per head, The BPL quota is Rs. 6.15 per kg @ 35 kgs per card and the AAY Quota is Rs. 3.00 per kg @ 35 kgs per card.

All Fair Price Shop dealers of the District are hereby requested to lift the allotted quota of rice immediately and to arrange the distribution to the beneficiaries.

Any non-supply or overcharging of rate and supply of inferior quality of rice by the Fair Price Shop Dealers should be brought to the notice of the Deputy Commissioner, Supply, East Khasi Hills, Shillong.
