SHILLONG RBI OFFICE INAUGURATED

Shillong, August 24, 2012: Deputy Governor, Reserve Bank of India, Dr K C Chakrabarty inaugurated its office at Shillong on August 24, 2012. This new office housed at Apphira Building, Fruit Garden, Jowai- Shillong Road is the third office in the North Eastern states after Guwahati and Agartala. Initially the office is focusing on development of banking services in the state and then gradually takes up other Central Banking functions.

Dr K C Chakrabarty, the Chief Guest on the occasion stated that the significance of setting up of new branches is a global agenda. While pursuing financial inclusion creation of inclusive growth is necessary for agenda can be inclusive only if the society is inclusive. He felt that the participation of the local people is necessary in order to create inclusive growth.

The chief guest also cautioned the staff to be careful while giving credit to the customers in view of the past experiences. There are enough resources in the state but it requires more entrepreneurship and technical knowhow that should be given to the people, said Dr Chakrabarty. He opined that this new venture will improve and accelerate development and lead to stability and inclusive growth.

Meghalaya Chief Secretary, W M S Pariat, addressing the gathering as Guest of Honour, congratulated the officers and staff of Reserve Bank of India for taking this initiative paving way for speedy development. This will also facilitate the banking sector, economic development, currency management, he added.

There is a remarkable impetus in the banking sector and the momentum is increasing with about 291 bank branches in the state which is possible due to concerted effort of the people. Mr Pariat also informed that the state government has been providing security arrangement to all these branches which will be extended to the districts as well. The state will soon be implementing the use of Bio-metric card or smart cards for NREGS scheme, added Mr Pariat.

He further mentioned about the major problem faced by the state like topography, hilly terrain, connectivity, road congestion which inspite of the improvements done by concerned departments needs to be tackled from time to time. He also seeks financial assistance especially for students studying outside with minimum collateral security and to solve the problem of shortage of small denominations and currency notes.

The inaugural function was attended by Mr B K Dev Barma, Additional Chief Secretary, Government of Meghalaya, Mr P K Jena, Regional Director, RBI, Mr Shyam Sunder, O-I-C RBI, Shillong, senior functionaries of Central Government, State government, officials from banks and financial institutions, Rangbah Shnong and others.

Shillong, August 24, 2012: The District Level Committee on Ground Water Resources under East Khasi Hills District has informed all individuals and public institutions within East Khasi Hills District to seal defunct wells immediately in order to avoid any untoward incident in future.
