ANNUAL PLAN FOR MEGHALAYA FINALIZED

Plan discussions were held today, the 27th August, 2009 in the Planning Commission between Dr. D.D. Lapang, Chief Minister of Meghalaya and Dr. Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission to finalize the annual plan for 2009-10. The Chief Minister was accompanied by Dr Mukul Sangma, Dy Chief Minister, Shri Ranjan Chatterjee, Chief Secretary and other senior officials.

The Chief Minister of Meghalaya impressed upon the Dy. Chairman, the achievements which Meghalaya had made in terms of making the State a peaceful State, its success in increasing the area of forest cover, remarkable progress made in floriculture, the high literacy levels as well as the reduction of the drop out rate in upper primary level. The Dy. Chairman, while appreciating the efforts of the State Government, requested the State to accelerate the implementation of various schemes. He especially pointed out the need to have a good infrastructure in order to open up various other developmental possibilities. He also said that the Planning Commission had some limitations and that it would have to make plan allocations comparable to the resources which the State Government raises.

Taking note of the progress State Government has made as well as its contribution to the national priorities, the Dy. Chairman agreed to the annual plan size of Rs. 2,100 crores for the year 2009-10, which is 40 p.c. more than the allocation for 2008-09.
