ADJOURNMENT OF ELECTION IN 4 MUNICIPALITIES

Shillong, October 29, 2010: Consequent to the issue of notification under the relevant Act and Rules, all arrangements had been put in place for conduct of the Municipal elections at Tura, Williamnagar, Baghmara and Resubelpara. Arrangement for adequate security and law and order coverage had also been made.

However, during the evening of the 28th and 29th October, 2010, a series of disturbing incidents had taken placed which indicated that, there was a concerted attempt to disrupt the election process. An assessment of the situation was accordingly made by the concerned District Administrations, which after examining all inputs available at the field level, had indicated that there was very strong possibility of disruption to the polling process, and it was also their considered view that this would have serious ramifications on the law and order situation, with implications on life and property.

After assessing the situation in detail, it was the considered view of the Municipal election authorities that, the situation was not conducive for the conduct of a free, fair and peaceful election. Given the imminent possibility of major law and situation, was therefore considered prudent to adjourn the elections to the 4 municipalities for the time being.
