“There is a special importance to the Census this time as it will help in developing the National Population Register which is linked to the Unique Identification Number (UID) to be issued to all citizens of the country,” said the Governor, the first to be enumerated in the state.

“Initially we will be doing the house-listing. The exercise will continue till May 15. The actual headcount will be done from February 9 to February 28 next year, followed by a five-day revision,” informed the Director Census Operations, Meghalaya Mr K L Tariang.

The enumerators for the first time will collect information like ownership of mobile phones, computers, internet, having treated or untreated drinking water facility and obtain finger prints and photographs which will help government formulate plans and strengthen the country's security.

Later, a National Population Register (NPR) will be created in which the government will have the entire population of the country under one database.

The enumeration was conducted in the presence of the State Nodal Officer, Census Operations, Meghalaya, Mr P W Ingty and Principal Census Officer, East Khasi Hills District, Mr J Lyngdoh. (mipr)
