CEO REVIEWS THE PREPAREDNESS OF WKH FOR COUNTING OF VOTES

The Chief Electoral officer of Meghalaya, Shri. F.R Kharkongor accompanied by the Jt. CEO Shri. K.L Nongbri visited West Khasi Hills District Nongstoin today to review the preparedness and arrangements for counting of votes in connection with the General Election to Lok Sabha, 2019. On his visit, the CEO along with his teams inspected the strong room where EVMs, VVPATs Machine which were kept in a tight security, the counting halls of both Mairang and Nongstoin assembly segments before meeting the District official at the Conference Hall DC Office Nongstoin. The CEO highlighted the new ECI Guideline and rules to be implemented for the counting to be held on 23rd May, 2019. He urged upon the District Election machinery including the police department to take care of the relevant factors like Electricity, internet facilities, security, Election manpower to avoid any human error for he said, “There is no room for error or any blunder”, He concluded.

INTERNATIONAL LABOUR DAY OBSERVED IN SWGH

International Labour Day was observed at Damalgre in south west garo hills on may 1st with an awareness programme on legal rights themed “access to justice to unorganized sectors’. The programme was organized by the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) in collaboration with the labour department and aimed at providing awareness on legal rights daily wage earners and labourers who fell under the unorganized sector. During the day long programme resource persons Labour Inspector Silte Betsy M Sangma and Panel Lawyer Grabriella Simre D Sangma touched on subjects ranging from the Labour Act and free legal aid and access to justice by unorganized sectors. The awareness sessions were followed by an interactive session wherein villagers voiced their doubts and interacted with the resource persons.

Earlier District & Sessions Judge cum Chairman DLSA C Dkhar spoke on the legal aid services provided by the DLSA. She informed that free legal aid counsel was provided to unorganized sectors. Speaking on Para Legal Volunteers (PLVs) she said that PLVs were selected from within the community to help villagers seek justice or legal aid. The PLVs help the villagers by communicating their needs through writing and hence they need to be at least matriculate or above she informed and added that though their services were voluntary DLSA gave them remuneration.

MAY DAY OBSERVED IN SWKH

Along with the rest of the world, International Workers day known as May day on the theme “Uniting workers for social and economic achievements’ was also observed today at the Multi purpose Hall, DC’s office,Mawkyrwat. The programme was organized by the office of the District Legal Services Authority,South West Khasi Hills District,Mawkyrwat. Shri.W.Biam,Additional Deputy Commissioner of South West Khasi Hills District in his keynote address highlighted on the origination of the day and its importance.He said that the programme was organized with a view to create awareness as well as to reminds one and all about the dignity and importance of labourers and their contribution towards the society and the economy of the state as a whole. He therefore reminds us of our role and responsibilities and at the sametime called forth for hardwork,dedication and sincerity.

Shri L.K.Diengdoh,EAC(Judicial),South West Khasi Hills while distributing Signboards to Para Legal volunteers of the district informed the gathering that Legal Aids Clinic and Support centres have been set in South West Khasi Hills District with a view to provide legal services to those in need of legal aids and for those who could not afford to avail such benefits through the Para Legal Volunteers(PLVs) of the district..He therefore urged upon one and all to utilize these centres and avail such benefits. Shri.S.Passah,District Child Protection Officer,South West Khasi Hills District,Mawkyrwat dwelt at length on Child & Adolescence Labour Prohibition Act 2016(an act which prohibits engagement of children in all occupations and prohibits engagement of adolescents in hazardous occupations) and other rules and acts thereby calling for support and cooperation from various quarters and to lodged their complaints in the nearest Police Station if they detect cases of child labour and adolescents engaged in hazardous occupations.

Shri.S.Kurbah,Labour Inspector covered on ‘Payment of Wages Act’, ‘Minimum wages Act’, ‘Meghalaya Shop & Establishment Act ‘and ‘Building & other Construction Workers Welfare Board.’He therefore called upon eligible workers to get themselves registered in the office of the LabourInspector,Nongstoin in order to avail the schemes and other benefits offered by the Building & other Construction Workers Welfare Board. Signboards were also distributed to para Legal Volunteers of the district. ShriL.K.Diengdoh,M.C.S,EAC(Judicial),South West Khasi Hills District chaired the function.ShriM.Songthiang,L.D.A (Judicial)offered the vote of thanks.
