FOUNDATION DAY OF DIET CELEBRATED, TOPPERS FELICITATED

Shillong, June 1, 2011: The foundation day of the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET), Tura was celebrated today in a grand function held at the premises of DIET, Rongkhon, Tura, West Garo Hills District. The toppers in the Diploma in Elementary Education examinations conducted recently were also felicitated in the function.

The DIET was established on this day in the year 2004 with an objective to train teachers and enable them to instruct their pupils in a more thorough, disciplined and structured manner. The Institution imparts training to elementary and pre-service teachers equipping them with necessary teaching skills to tackle everyday hurdles associated with the teaching profession.

Mrs. Y. R. Marak, Sr. Grade Lecturer and Principal in charge, DIET, Tura, delivering the introductory address said that the institute till date has two senior grade lecturers, nine lecturers, two instructors and full ministerial staff aiding the administration. She said that since its inception the institute had trained 219 teachers. She later commended the rank holders in the recently conducted Diploma in Elementary Education examinations.

The Chief Guest at the function, Mr. Sanjay Goyal, Deputy Commissioner, West Garo Hills speaking on the occasion expressed his delight in being able to attend the function. Taking in view the recent SSLC and HSSLC results, Mr. Goyal however stressed on the need of more trained teachers to bring about better results. He said that the pass percentages of students in the region were well below expected levels and that adequately equipping the students in the primary and upper primary level was imperative. Stressing on the need to discourage proxy teachers he informed that it was an illegal practice and that strict legal action was due to any found guilty.

Later Mr. Goyal released the annual news letter of the institute and felicitated the six rank holders of the Diploma in Elementary Education examination.

Among other who spoke on the occasion were Mr. P. K. Hajong, Inspector of Schools, Tura, Mrs. A. B. Momin, Sr. Grade Lecturer, DIET, Tura and Mrs. S. N. Sangma, Lecturer, DIET, Tura. The programme was attended by invitees, past and present teacher trainees and staff of DIET, Tura.
