NOMINATIONS FOR VAYOSHRESHTHA SAMMAN

As part of the celebration of the International Day of Older Persons (IDOP) on 1st October every year, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Department of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, has been conferring Vayoshreshtha Samman on eminent senior citizens and institutions involved in rendering distinguished services for the cause of elderly persons, especially indigent senior citizens. Intending individuals from East Khasi Hills District who desire their names to be recommended to the Government for the Award are requested to send their nominations to the office of the Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills District, Shillong on or before 29th June, 2018. 26TH ANNIVERSARY OF RIBHOI FOUNDATION DAY CELEBRATED

To commemorate the 26th anniversary of Ri Bhoi Foundation Day which is observed on the 4th of June every year, the office of the Deputy Commissioner, Ri Bhoi District organized a programme on the 4th June, 2018 at District Auditorium Hall Nongpoh. Shri Mayralborn Syiem, MLA of Nongpoh, Shri Jason S. Mawlong, MLA of Umsning, Shri George B. Lyngdoh, MLA of Umroi, Shri Sosthenes Sohtun, MLA of Jirang, Smti. R.M Kurbah Deputy Commissioner, Shri S. Thamar, Superintendent of Police, officers from different line departments, Syiem Raid, Headmen, teachers and students from various schools and also the awardees attended the programme. Shri Mayralborn Syiem, MLA of Nongpoh, lauded the initiatives taken by the District Administration for celebrating the Ribhoi Foundation day, he reminded about the selflessness of the members of the Ri Bhoi Dorbar like late Fr. Sylvanus Sngi Lyngdoh, Dr. D.D Lapang and others for their vision, mission rendered by them who had turned out their dreams into reality. He also stated that Ri Bhoi District is rich in culture, it is also the only district which has produce large quantity of seri silk, citrus fruits and also a potentialities for tourism hence he called upon the people to work hard and also to cooperate with the government for all round development of the district. Shri G.B Lyngdoh, MLA of Umroi in his speech urged upon the gathering to commemorate this day as an awakening day for all, where the residents, the officers and MLAs of the district will look back and see what they have done and what more to be done for the district, he further added that though this district has been marching ahead with the time in all aspects like education, agriculture, sports etc, but a milestones ahead is needed to go, hence he seeks the cooperation of the syiem raid, the headmen in coordination with the government officials and the MLAs to promote and uplift the socio- economic lives of the people. Shri J. S. Mawlong, MLA of Umsning, said that Ri Bhoi District is one of the district which has maintain peace, law and order and also a spirit of unity among citizens, he also advice to have a collective responsibility among the citizens, the officials an the MLAs for the upliftment of all round development.

Shri S. Sohtun, MLA of Jirang express his view that Ri Bhoi District is a land which has been blessed with good fertile soil and a temperate climate and the land which is conducive grand for any kind of activities like agriculture and other related activities, cottage industries and handloom etc and many other kinds of investments hence he called upon the people particularly the unemployed youths that they should not depend exclusively only on white color jobs but instead they must create possibilities for self-employment for a better livelihood. Smti. R.M Kurbah, Deputy Commissioner in her speech said that it is a privilege for the people of the district to have this day as to commemorate and pay tribute to the tireless effort of the fore fathers and leaders of the district whose hardwork and dedication transformed this land into a full-fledged district of the state. She urged the young generation to follow their footsteps and dedicate themselves to bring laurels to the district. The celebration was also enthusiastically entertained with the traditional songs and cultural dances performed by students and youths from different area of the district and meanwhile, the office of Deputy Commissioner in collaboration with other allied department like PHE, CDPO and DM&HO conducted the presentations of awards and recognition with Memento and Certificate to the Tyrso Valley Wildlife Protection Society who contribute services in the preservation of migrated birds Amur Falcon at Umru village, Smti. P.Ranee Retd. Employee of PHE Department Nongpoh who commonly participated in the Marathon race conducted by the DSO, Nongpoh, Four ASHAs and Three Aganwadi workers of the district for their contribution and innovation services made in helping women and children and also awards have been distributed to the Three villages who preserve and maintain the environment and cleanliness in their village.

WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY CELEBRATION 2018 AT NONGPOH RI BHOI DISTRICT

The District Water & Sanitation Mission, SBM (G), Ri Bhoi District organized today a District Level Awareness Programme on Swachh Bharat to observe the “World Environment Day” at MUDA Complex, Nongpoh, Ri Bhoi District. Smti R.M. Kurbah Deputy Commissioner cum Chairman DWSM graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Others present on the occasion includes, Shri D. D. Umdor, EE,PHE cum Member Secretary DWSM, Nongpoh, Shri O.B Ranee, President, RAWA, Shri N. Mawkhiew, President RERAM, Meghalaya Shillong, members of Nongpoh Town Dorbar, the headmen, officers from various departments and others. The objective of the programme is to create awareness amongst the drivers of Sumo, Taxi and Auto Rickshaw of Nongpoh area about the harmful effect of plastic use and plastic wastes and also advocate the effective policies to reduce plastic use. Speaking on the occasion, the Deputy Commissioner said that the celebration will create awareness among the general public as well as drivers and passengers who commute daily through the National Highway and other routes on the harmful effect of plastic uses as well as the health risks associated with the throwing of plastic wastes in the water. Meghalaya state being a place of attraction for tourists, it is the duty of each and every citizen to maintain cleanliness not only in our home but also the surroundings and also to protect and preserve our environment, she added. The programme ended with the flagging off a Royal Enfield Riders Association Meghalaya Bike Rally by the Deputy Commissioner, Nongpoh commencing from MUDA Complex Nongpoh to Toll Plaza Pahammawlein. On the day, Stickers and garbage bags for keeping wastes inside vehicles have been distributed to all drivers of Sumo, Taxi and Auto Rickshaw.
