TURA INDUSTRIAL FAIR

The West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Swapnil Tembe inaugurated the Two Day Tura Industrial Fair (TIF), 2022 at SMELC Building Dakopgre, Tura on 9th June 2022. The Industrial Fair is being organised by the District Commerce and Industries Centre, Tura in order to encourage and promote budding local entrepreneurs of the region and market their products.

Local Entrepreneurs from the Garo Hills region have participated and displayed their products for sale ranging from the famous Nokrek Raw Honey, local Karitchi, cashewnut, among others and various wooden crafts and artefacts, paintings including products from weaving and handloom like Dakmandas and other accessories.

FLOODING WREAKS HAVOC IN SOUTH WEST GARO HILLS

The residents of Ampati woke up to the horrific sight of flood ravaged houses and surroundings in the early hours of Thursday morning. Causing widespread devastation to lives and properties, affecting 26 villages and a population of 890 people across South West Garo Hills, the flash flood resulted due to incessant rain which caused the rivers to swell up.

Reportedly, about 3 houses have been fully damaged and 43 houses partially damaged, while one injured and one person from Sonamati village, under Betasing C&RD Block lost his life due to a massive landslide that occurred during the wee hours. The two nurses trapped inside flooding Mellim Sub-Centre, under Rerapara C&RD Block, were rescued by heroic village locals of that area, who jumped into action, risking their own lives, to save the helpless medical professionals during the uncalculable situation.

The intake of Kisanpara Dam have also been affected as villages under Zikzak C&RD Block and Betasing C&RD Block are reportedly declared worse affected by the calamity. The Executive Engineer of PHE, Ampati informed that the water supply to Ampati town may be affected due to damage of pumping machinery and that all efforts are being carried out to restore the same.

Many roads connecting villages from Ampati have been cut off by landslides, fallen trees and flooded streets, disrupting commutes and other daily activities. Apart from the catastrophic disaster suffered by PWD roads, fisheries, agriculture and other areas, few cars in the low lying areas of Ampati have been reportedly swept away into nearby streams.

Efforts are being made by the District Administration to provide gratuity relief of food items to the worst affected villages along with the SDRF team who have started action at the disaster hit areas. District Disaster Management Officer, Debojit Koch announced that presently, the situation of the Ganol river is not overflowing or inundated with vulnerable villages such as Harigao, Sankagrige, Boiragipara, Mukdangra Gahatgre and is under control.

UNION MINISTER OF STATE, MINISTRY OF EXTERNAL AFFAIRS AND EDUCATION VISITS EAST JAINTIA HILLS

The Hon’ble Union Minister of State, Ministry Of External Affairs And Education, Shri. Rajkumar Rajan Singh today arrived in East Jaintia Hills District for a two days visit. He was accompanied by Shri. D.K. Singh, OSD to the Union Minister of State, Shri. A. Baranwal, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, East Jaintia Hills District, Khliehriat, Shri. S. S. Syiemlieh, MCS, Addl. Deputy Commissioner, East Jaintia Hills District, Khliehriat, and other officials of the District.

On his the first day of visit to the District, the Hon’ble Union Minister of State, Ministry Of External Affairs And Education, Shri. Rajkumar Rajan Singh visited the Health and Wellness Centre at Dkhiah West. He interacted with the beneficiaries and inquired about the medical services provided at the centre such as medicines, treatment for diseases, Covid Vaccination, Ayushman Bharat, E-SHRAM registration, and drinking water at the village. Other central schemes that was discussed during the interaction with the beneficiaries were the PM- Kissan, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana(PMUY), Ujala Led bulb Scheme among others.

The Hon’ble Union Minister of State, Ministry Of External Affairs And Education, Shri. Rajkumar Rajan Singh also visited the Fair Price shop at Byndihati village, wherein the FPS dealer informed the Minister there are 135 numbers of beneficiaries under the - Pradhan Mantri Gareeb Kalyan Anna Yojana Scheme in the village and, also demonstrated how to operate the E-POS machine for distribution of food grain to the beneficiaries. He also visited the Anganwadi Centre at Tuber Village and interacted with the Anganwadi workers and beneficiaries under the scheme Poshan Abhiyanand the activities and facilities provided to children at the centre. Later in the day, the Union Minister visited the Turmeric Processing Unit under Mission Lakadong at Shangpung Village in West Jaintia Hills District.
