SALE OF CIGARETTES AND OTHER TOBACCO PRODUCTS TO MINORS PROHIBITED

The District Magistrate, East Jaintia Hills District, has promulgated an Order under Section 144 Cr.P.C prohibiting persons to sell, offer for sale or permit sale of cigarettes or any other tobacco products to any person who is under 18 of age in an area within radius of one hundred yards of any educational institution within East Jaintia Hills District. This Order comes into force with immediate effect and shall remain in force until further orders. This Order is necessitated following reports that there are shops and shopkeepers who sell tobacco products near/adjacent to the School premises, educational institutions in the District which is in violation of Section 6 of the Cigarette and other Tobacco Products Act 2003. Moreover, sale of cigarette and other tobacco products to a person below the age of 18 years is prohibited and is a punishable offence.

FRESH APPLICATIONS INVITED FROM PRIVATE CULTURAL TROUPES AND CASUAL ARTIST

The Bureau of Outreach & Communication under the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Government of India is inviting fresh applications in the prescribed proforma from Meghalaya for Private Cultural troupes and Casual Artist (also known as Individual Artist/Empanelled Artist) for registration/empanelment with Regional Outreach Bureau, Guwahati for inter-personal communication through traditional and folk performing arts etc. Willing candidates may visit the website: www.davp.nic.in. For further details, troupe leader may contact the office of the Regional Outreach Bureau, Guwahati. Application duly filled in the prescribed Proforma should reach the Addl. Director General, Zonal Bureau of Outreach & Communication, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Assam Khadi & Village Industries Board Complex, Maniram Dewan Road, Chandmari, Guwahati-781003, on or before 31.07.2019.

SALE OF CIGARETTES AND OTHER TOBACCO PRODUCTS TO MINORS PROHIBITED

The Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills District, has issued order prohibiting sale of cigarettes and other products to any person who is under 18 years of age at the market place and in an area within a radius of one hundred yards of any educational institution within the District. Vendors, stalls and other shopkeepers where tobacco products are sold shall display a notice containing the warning “Sale of cigarettes and other tobacco products to a person under the age of eighteen years is strictly prohibited and is a punishable offence”. Any person who contravenes the provisions of Section 6 shall be guilty of offences under this Act and shall be punishable with the imposition of fines and other prescribed penalties. This Order is necessitated following reports that vendors, stall and other shopkeepers are selling cigarettes and other tobacco products to minors at market places and within the proximity of educational institutions openly and in complete violation of Section 6 of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act 2003 (COTPA) which prohibits sale of tobacco products to minors, ie., below the age of 18 years.
