NOKMAS NEED TO RESPOND TO THEIR RESPONSIBILITIES

TURA, August 6: A Seminar cum Workshop on Nokmaship was today, organised at the Tura District Auditorium by the Council of A•king Nokmas comprising of hundred and ten Nokmas from Meghalaya.

The Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Dr. Mukul M. Sangma presided over the function as the Chief Guest. Stressing on the importance of the Nokma Council as a means to address the grievances of the people of the region he said that it was imperative that Nokmas and all those within the administration of the Nokmaship truly understand the plight of the people before addressing it. Dr. Sangma deliberating on the necessity of the Nokma Council in mitigating the problems of the people pertaining to local law and order said “The Traditional mode of dispensing justice is unique and therefore I appeal to the Nokma Council to facilitate local judicial practices and cooperate with the District Administration for fulfilling the objectives concerning the Nokma Council”. Dr. Sangma later, stating that it was of utmost importance that Nokmas and village elders react and duly perform their responsibilities said “There is always a need to address inadequacies by the local administration and therefore Nokmas are required to respond to their responsibilities being the democratic head of the region”.

Mr. B. M. Lanong , Deputy Chief Minister, Meghalaya, while addressing the gathering expressed his appreciation in being invited to the Nokma Council’s Seminar cum Workshop and said “We are going to hold an arts and culture expo and the winners of the expo will be sent to Delhi for further exposure”.

Others who spoke on the occasion were Dr. Milton Sangma, Adviser, Nokma Council, Mr. T. Aoa, Secretary, NEZCC.
