Press Release No. 10/11 AN APPEAL FROM GOVERNOR OF MEGHALAYA Shillong, January 10, 2011: I am deeply distressed at the ongoing ethnic conflict between the Rabhas and Garos in which precious human lives have been lost and properties destroyed. It is unfortunate that these two tribes who have the common ethnic origin and bound by tradition and custom are chashing with each other. There is no doubt that it is a case of misunderstanding fuelled by rumours and mischief makers. It has already caused great sufferings and I appeal to all to stop the mutually destructive violence and live in peace and harmony. I also appeal to the community leaders, social and religious activists to restore peace in the strife-torn areas by bringing together people of both the tribes. |

Press Release No. 11/11 AWARENESS WORKSHOP ON PERSISTENT ORGANIC POLLUTANTS INAUGURATED Shillong, 10 January 2011: An awareness workshop on ‘Persistent Organic Pollutants’ organized by the Ministry of Environment and Forest, New Delhi through the MSVBDCP, Shillong was inaugurated today the 10 January 2011 at the Pine Wood hotel, Shillong. Smt Ampareen Lyngdoh, Education Minister, Meghalaya graced the occasion as Chief Guest. The function was chaired by Shri . D. P Wahlang, Commissioner Secretary (H&FW) cum Vice Chairman, Meghalaya State Vector Borne Disease Control Society, Shillong. Other dignitaries include Dr Chhanda Chowdhury, Director, MoEF, New Delhi, Dr. C.J Naidu, CPRI, Bangalore, Dr. T Basu, HIL, New Delhi, Dr. Ashwani Sharma, MoEF, New Delhi, Jitendra Sharma, NEERI, NAgpur, Dr Das, Project Director of Aids Control Program, Dr. Sakhina Laloo, Deputy Diredtor Health Services (Malaria), and many more. The main objective of this program is to make the people aware of how to tackle POPs i.e ‘Persistent Organic Pollutants’ which are organo-chlorine compounds of concern to the international community as they are highly toxic to human and the environment, persist in the environment, resist degradation and many more. Speaking in the occasion, Smt. Ampareen Lyndoh stated that this topic is highly important. She lauded the Stockholm Convention for taking this awareness program as their chapter and for creating such a program. She further stated that she would look forward to include such awareness as part of the academic program in the state. |
