Press Release No. 10/11

AN APPEAL FROM GOVERNOR OF MEGHALAYA

Shillong, January 10, 2011: I am deeply distressed at the ongoing ethnic conflict between the Rabhas and Garos in which precious human lives have been lost and properties destroyed. It is unfortunate that these two tribes who have the common ethnic origin and bound by tradition and custom are chashing with each other. There is no doubt that it is a case of misunderstanding fuelled by rumours and mischief makers. It has already caused great sufferings and I appeal to all to stop the mutually destructive violence and live in peace and harmony. I also appeal to the community leaders, social and religious activists to restore peace in the strife-torn areas by bringing together people of both the tribes.
