PRESIDENT UNVEILS STATUES OF FREEDOM FIGHTERS AT RAJ BHAVAN

In culmination of her three days’ visit to the State, Hon’ble President of India, Smti. Droupadi Murmu today unveiled bust-sized statues of three freedom fighters of Meghalaya, U Tirot Singh, U Kiang Nangbah and Pa Togan Sangma at Raj Bhavan, Shillong.

The statues were sculpted by Riti Academy of Visual Arts. Hon'ble President was accompanied by the Hon'ble Governor of Meghalaya, Shri. Paghu Chauhan, Meghalaya Chief Minister. Shri. Conrad K Sangma, Meghalaya Health Minister Dr. M Ampareen Lyngdoh and senior government officers led by the Meghalaya Chief Secretary, Shri D. P Wahlang.

During the unveiling, Hon’ble President was appraised of the role played by the three martyrs’ in their uprising against British rule, which led to the ultimate sacrifice of their lives for the sake of their motherland.

Before her departure from Shillong, the Hon’ble President also planted a tree at Raj Bhavan.

On the first day of her visit on January 15, Hon’ble President inaugurated the 5th edition of the Meghalaya Games at Tura. On January 16, she addressed the members of self-help groups at the Baljek Airport, Tura, and virtually lay the foundation stone for the new Integrated Administration Complex.

On the same day, President Murmu addressed a gathering at Mawphlang and virtually inaugurate upgraded Rongjeng Mangsang Adokgre Road and Mairang Ranigodown Azra Road as well as lay the foundation stones for Shillong Peak Ropeway and tourist accommodations in the villages of Kongthong, Mawlyngot and Kudengrim.

Later in the evening a civic reception was accorded to her by the Government of Meghalaya at Raj Bhavan, Shillong. The Hon’ble Governor, Shri. Paghu Chuhan also hosted a state dinner in honour of the President. A cultural programme showcasing the unique traditions and customs of the Khasi, Garo and Jaintia tribes was also organised on the occasion.
