Press Release No. 437/12 CM LAUNCHES YOUTH FOR GREEN MOVEMENT AT AMPATI Shillong, 15 OCTOBER 2012: Launching the Chief Minister Youth for Green Movement Campaign at Ampati, on 15 October, Meghalaya Chief Minister, Dr. Mukul Sangma led the cleaning drive at Ampati market. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Sangma urged the people to keep the state green and clean. Giving the example of Mawlynong, one of the cleanest villages in Asia, Dr. Sangma sought the cooperation of the people in maintaining healthy environment. Earlier in the morning, Dr. Sangma also flag-off the Green Marathon for both boys and girls organised by the district administration of South-West Garo Hills. The winners of the race, among the boys, were Kringsal Ch Marak, Malojan Ch Marak and Wetten Marak. Among the girls, Jekmila D Sangma, Sulitha B Sangma and Adik B Sangma. Dr. Sangma and his wife, Mrs. DD Shira, gave away the cash prizes and certificates to the winners. The function was presided over by Mr. Ram Singh, Deputy Commissioner and Mr. PK Boro, the Additional DC, proposed the proposed the vote of thanks. |
Press Release No. 438/12 CM INAUGURATES MULTI FACILITY CENTRE Shillong, 15 OCTOBER 2012: Multi Facility Centre, constructed under the Special Plan Assistance Scheme of the Border Areas Department at Purasingga village in Betasing C&RD Block was inaugurated by the Meghalaya Chief Minister, Dr. Mukul Sangma on 15 October. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Sangma said that Multi Facility Centre is a part of Govt-to-Citizen Services. Stressing on the need to accelerate the pace of development, he urged the people to provide land for infrastructural development in the newly created South-West Garo Hills district. Informing the people that more than 50 per cent of the weavers in India belonged to the north-east, Dr. Sangma said that training for the weavers will also be imparted in this centre very soon. With a view to provide more facilities to the weavers in the border areas, Dr. Sangma also said that funds for Sericulture and Weaving had been enhanced by 200 per cent and for improving of Multi Facility Centres, sufficient funds will be allocated during the current final year. Others who spoke on the occasion included Mr. Zenith Sangma, Co-Chairman of the Meghalaya State Planning Board. Earlier, Mrs. Eva Gunme R Marak, Assistant Director of Border Areas Development Department, offered the welcome address. Deputy Commissioner of South-West Garo Hills, Mr. Ram Singh, presided over the inaugural function and Border Areas Development Officer, Ampati, proposed the vote of thanks. |

Press Release No. 440/12 CM LAUNCHES YOUTH FOR GREEN CAMPAIGN MOVEMENT AT TURA Shillong, 16 Oct 2012: Meghalaya Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma today, launched the Chief Minister’s Youth for Green Campaign Movement in an elaborate function organised by the West Garo Hills District Administration in collaboration with the department of Sports and Youth Affairs, Meghalaya, at Tura Chandmary playground. Earlier in the morning a green marathon held for youth of different age groups was flagged off by Dr Sangma from the same venue. The marathon was followed by a green walk participated by young and old alike which was led by Dr Sangma accompanied by his wife Dikkanchi D Shira. The launch of the movement coincided with the World Food Day celebrations and later in the day Dr Sangma inaugurated the World Food Day celebration themed ‘Agricultural Cooperatives – Key to feeding the world’ organised by the Agriculture Department at Chandmary playground. Addressing the gathering Dr Sangma said that the Youth for green campaign was not merely a campaign but a movement to strive for cleanliness in the localities, market areas, villages, towns and rivers. The Chief Minister’s Youth for Green Campaign Movement, is an endeavor to rope in the youth to generate, evoke and create mass awareness among all members of public to keep the environment clean, Dr Sangma informed. He stated that to achieve this objective the state government in collaboration with concerned stakeholders like schools, colleges, registered societies and NGOs who are willing and interested to promote cleanliness has chalked out programmes and constituted district committees work out detailed strategies and prepare an action plan with special focus on the involvement of the youth in the exercise so that cleanliness becomes habitual and institutionalized by one and all in the years to come in the state as a whole. Dr Sangma stressing on the importance of participation by the youth urged the elders of the society to set right examples on cleanliness so that the younger generation can emulate it and pass it on to others. He at length talked on the Integrated Basin Development and Livelihood programme and said that the youth for green campaign movement complimented the IBDLP as it aimed at promoting optimal and effective development within a sustainability framework while focusing on efficient conservation and preservation of natural resources especially water. Speaking on pollution Dr Sangma said that though Meghalaya could still withstand the onslaught of man induced environmental degradation it was time for the youth of the region to shoulder the responsibility of preserving and conserving the environment. He later suggested that in order to reduce pollution and inculcate healthy habits a day should be designated each month for the people of Tura to abstain from using their vehicles and instead walk to their respective educational institutions, business establishments and government offices. The Chief Minister later distributed certificates and prizes to the winners of the green marathon and visited the stalls erected at the venue for the World Food Day Celebrations. Among others who spoke at the gathering were former Minister Miriam D Shira, State Planning Board Co Chairman, Zenith M Sangma, Meghalaya Employment Generation Resources Council Co Chairman Billy Kid A Sangma, West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Pravin Bakshi, Additional Deputy Commissioner Ambrose Ch Marak and Tura Municipal Board CEO T G Momin. |
