All INDIA SAINIK SCHOOL ENTRANCE EXAMINATION

The All India Sainik School Entrance Examination (Written) for admission to Classes VI and IX in Sainik Schools for 2006-2007 session will be held on January 8, 2006.

Prospectus and application forms are available on payment of Rs. 300/- in cash for General/Defence category and Rs. 200/- for SC/ST category from the School Office at Goalpara from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM or by IPO/Bank Draft of Rs. 340/- and Rs/ 240 respectively drawn in favour of the Principal Sainik School, Goalpara payable at SBI, Mornoi (Code 9148) if desired by post.

The proposed centres of examination are Cotton Collegiate HS School, Guwahati, Sainik School, Goalpara, Government Boys HS School, Dibrugarh and Government Boys HS School, Shillong.

The last date of sale and receipt of filled application forms is 10 December, 2005.

SEMINAR ON PEACE PROCESS IN NORTH EAST INDIA HELD

A two day seminar on Peace Process in North East India organized by the Indian Council of Social Science Research, North Eastern Regional Centre ((ICSSR-NERC), Shillong is inaugurated today by the Meghalaya Governor, Mr. M. M. Jacob, at the conference room of the North Eastern Hills University (NEHU), Shillong. Vice- Chancellor, NEHU and Chairman, ICSSR-NERC, Professor Pramod Tandon presided over the inaugural function.

Mr. Jacob in his inaugural speech said that India being a true democratic nation has been able to tackle internal and external forces that tried to disrupt peace. Recalling Mahatma Gandhi’s thought of non-violence, he said that any attempt to bring about peace Should be through non-political and from one whose moral stature is beyond doubt. Stating that North Eastern Region is unique in the country in culture, linguistic and ethnic terms, he informed that the Constitution of India through its Sixth Schedule is committed to protect, preserve and promote the rich cultural diversity with a spirit of mutual co-existence and recognition. He then urged upon the people to follow the thoughts of Gandhi to avoid pitfalls of falling into the opinionated traps of the majoritarian and dominant groups, who often speak a language of power unacceptable to the large section of minorities and oppressed group. Informing that treatment of equality for the weak and unevenly developed societies is embodied in our Constitution, he also urged upon the people to take good advantage of such values which can complement the value of peace. Respect for human life that comes through a reasonable balance of political values and social values is another aspect of peace, he added.

Quoting Maclntyre’s concept of peace, he said that if we design our own good, we should recognize the good of the other without which the struggles for attaining group rights become meaningless. Stating that violence and insecurity are major concerns in the region, Mr. Jacob felt that there should be a compulsory peace study programme in the Universities of the region, for which NEHU could make an auspicious beginning.

Earlier Padmabhushan and member National Advisory Council, New Delhi, Mr. Mrinal Miri while delivering his key-note address talk about the concept of peace and problems in North Eastern Region.

Dr. Prasanjit Biswas of Department of Philosophy delivered the welcome address while Dr. J. C. James of ICSSR-NERC offered the vote of thanks.
