DEATH ANNIVERSARY OF CAPT. WILLIAMSON A. SANGMA OBSERVED

The 26th Death Anniversary of the first Chief Minister of Meghalaya Capt. Williamson A. Sangma was observed at his native place at Siju, South Garo Hills on 24th October, 2016. The programme was jointly organised by the Capt. Williamson A. Sangma Welfare Committee, Siju and his nearest kith and kin at the Capt Williamson A. Sangma Memorial Park, near Siju cave where hundreds of people from all walks of life gathered at the Memorial service as a mark of respect to the great leader. Addressing the gathering as the Chief Guest, the Local MLA and Parliamentary Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya Mr. Rophul S. Marak while recalling the good works of Capt. Sangma said that as a mark of respect to the great leader, his death anniversary deserves to be a State Holiday and opined that different types of programmes should be organised to mark the day. Stating that he will try to involve the District Administration in the observation of death anniversary of the great leader from next year, Mr. Marak said that from next year onwards the day will be observed in a more meaningful and colourful manner so that the anniversary will find a place in the tourism map of the State.

ASSESSMENT CAMP FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES HELD

The Assessment Camp for Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) was held today at Monfort Centre for Education, Danakgre, near Tura covering the beneficiaries from the entire Districts of Garo Hills. The programme was organized by Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO), under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment and Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, supported and coordinated by District Administration, West Garo Hills, Tura, DDRC, Civil Hospital, Tura, Monfort Centre for Education, Tura, Bethany Society, Tura and Office of the Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha, Shillong. Deputy Commissioner, West Garo Hills, Pravin Bakshi also inspected the Assessment Camp conducted especially for the welfare of the PWDs and family members of the PWDs. Altogether 350 persons have registered their names during this camp for assessment and about 65 persons with disabilities have been selected and given Disability Certificate by the concerned Medical Officer during the assessment camp whereby Aids and Appliances would be distributed to them later after completing the necessary formalities.

MOCK DRILL AT JOWAI CIVIL HOSPITAL

The District Disaster Management Authority, West Jaintia Hills District, Jowai in collaboration with the Jowai Civil Hospital, Ialong will be conducting a Mock Drill at the Hospital Complex on Earthquake and Fire on the 29th October 2016 involving all stake holders. The siren will be sounded at 8:30am. Public and patients of the hospital are requested to participate and extent support as a part of the Hospital's preparedness measure. This was informed by the Deputy Commissioner & Chairman, DDMA,West Jaintia Hills District Jowai.

STUDENTS AWARDED STIPENDS UNDER CHIEF MINISTERS CAREER GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING SCHEME

Chief Minister, Dr Mukul M Sangma today awarded stipends to 110 student beneficiaries under the Chief Minister’s Career Guidance & Counselling Scheme, Government of Meghalaya through the Ministry of Minorities, Government of India at a function held at U Soso Tham Auditorium, Shillong. The programme was also attended by Minister, Sports & Youth Affairs, Zenith M Sangma as the Guest of Honour. Addressing the gathering that comprised mostly of students, Chief Minister, Dr Mukul M Sangma who graced the occasion as the Chief Guest said that the Chief Minister’s Career Guidance & Counseling Scheme, which goes beyond the ambit of only coaching, is dedicated to the youth to realize their dreams of building their career based on their potentialities and skills. He added that the challenge of fulfilling the aspirations of the youth and the people can be addressed by bringing about a change in the system through the empowerment of the people. The Chief Minister also said that the programme creates an enabling environment provoking the youth to dare to dream big while providing the guidance to enable the youth to make the right career decision based on their potentialities. He also stressed on the importance of looking at all the options available while preparing for a career. He also said that with the bright students of this age beating the education system by excelling in their studies a higher benchmark needs to be set. The Chief Minister also informed that the format of the programme will be restructured soon to make it an effective mechanism to respond to the demand of the students and that it reaches all parts of the state. He said that there is a need for aggressive counselling for youth with different levels of Education and abilities so that they do not land up pursuing the wrong career. Speaking on the recruitment to various government departments and services the Chief Minister said, “While correcting the perceived manipulations of the system that give scope to a lot of corruption we are also sensitive to the dreams of the youth so that hopelessness among our youth is not generated”. He urged the schools and colleges to take advantage of the programme and also suggested that various activities like summer and winter Camps under the programme can be initiated so that students and youth can develop their skills and talents in their leisure time. Guest of Honour, Minister, Sports & Youth Affairs, Zenith M Sangma in his speech said that the a lot of youth under the programme have been benefited making them at par with any other youth of the country to compete in different competitive examinations and in making the right choice of career. It may be mentioned here that the Chief Minister’s Career Guidance & Counseling Scheme was launched in 2012 providing free coaching to students for Medical Entrance Exam, Engineering Entrance Exam, Banking Exams and IAS coaching. The Chief Minister also distributed token cheque to the 110 beneficiaries under the Central Minorities Scholarships during the programme. Minister, PWD (Buildings), Information & Public Relations, Labour, DR Ampareen Lyngdoh, Minister, PWD (Roads) Parliamentary Affairs etc Martin Danggo, Minister, Urban Affairs, Arts & Culture etc R V Lyngdoh and Parliamentary Secretary and MLA, Mendipathar, Marthon Sangma, Commisioner & Secretary, Sports & Youth Affairs, F R Kharkongor and Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills, P S Dkhar, and Chairman, Sachdeva College, Dr Sudhir Sachdeva were also present at the function.
