SPECIAL INTERACTIVE PROGRAMME HELD AT WEST KHASI HILLS

A Special Interactive Programme (SIP) on the theme “Strengthening of Rural Development Infrastructure, Disaster Management and Right to Information” was organized by the office of the District Public Relations Officer (DPRO), West Khasi Hills District, Nongstoin in collaboration with the office of the Project Manager, IFAD-Nongstoin on September 8, 2006 at Donki ingding village, West Khasi Hills District. The Project Director, DRDA, Mr. W Nongsiej graced the occasion as the chief guest.

In his speech, Mr. Nongsiej lauded the efforts of the office of the DPRO, West Khasi Hills for its initiatives in organizing such a programme for the welfare of the people of the area. He also said that the Government has recently implemented the Right to Information Act, 2005 in order to enable the citizens to seek any kind of information that they needed which is related to public interest. He also hoped that the people would utilize their rights and see that the plans and schemes of the government are implemented promptly and successfully for the benefit of the people of the area.

The programme for the day included- question and answer hour, where the local people put forward number of questions relating to different projects and schemes meant for the rural areas.

Later, a power point presentation on Disaster Management and preparation of Village Disaster Management was delivered by Mr. P Marbaniang, DPRO, Nongstoin.

Health camps and free eye check up was also held where 200 patients benefited from the camp.

PRESERVATION OF OZONE 2006 ORGANISED

An Ozone Layer Day was observed at Nongstoin Public School lat week under the supervision of the office of the Divisional Forest Officer (SF), West Khasi Hills, Nongstoin. The Additional Deputy Commissioner, West Khasi Hills, Mr. W Nongsiej graced the occasion as the chief guest.

In his speech, Mr. Nongsiej pointed out the alarming changes resulting to widespread calamities and losses to human lives and properties witness annually. He also said that there is an urgent need to create awareness among the people on maintenance and preservation of environment. He hoped that the programme should be conducted more frequently covering as many villages as possible in the District.

Among others who spoke on the occasion were, Mr. R D West, Member Secretary, SCSTE, Shillong, Mr. E P Syiem, Syiem of Nongstoin and Mr. S A Nongsiej, Divisional Forest Officer.

The highlights of the day included essay and quiz competitions for the students of various school of the District.
