KORBAR SING MEMORIAL AWARD

The Korbar Sing Memorial Award to meritorious student who secured First-Ten in the SSLC Examination 2006 was held at Anton Hall, St. Anthony’s Higher Secondary School, Shillong on October 30, 2006. The function was organized by the Syngkhong Kyntiew Ri (SKR). Meghalaya former Chief Minister and Chairman, Meghalaya Economic Development Council (MEDC) graced the occasion as the chief guest in the presence of the ex-MLA, Mrs. R Warjri, Dr. S L Marbaniang and Fr. P D Johny, Principal, St. Anthony’s Higher Secondary School.

In his speech, Dr. Lapang lauded the SKR for their untiring effort for the upliftment of the society and the state as a whole. He also said that teachers are the builders of the nation, adding that the future of the students is in the hands of the teachers. He urged upon the teachers to inculcate upon the students the spirit of presentability, dependability and acceptability so that the students can excel. He then urged upon the students to work hard and cooperate with their teachers for a bright future.

Others who spoke on the occasion were ex-MLA, Mrs. R Warjri, Mr. F Ropmay, president SKR, while Mr. B D. Majaw, Secretary SKR, proposed the vote of thanks.

Later Dr. Lapang handed over the awards to Ms. N Kharnaior of St. Mary’s H S School, Ms. D L Sawain of Christian Academy School, Mr. G B Nongseij of St. Peter’s H S School, Ms. J V Paswett of St. Mary’s H S School, Ms. L Nongrum of Auxilium H S School, Ms. N Nongtdu of St. Margaret’s H S School, Ms. M Lyngdoh of Synod H S School and Ms. H Syiemlieh of Langtor H S School.

WILDLIFE WEEK CELEBRATION CONCLUDED

The valedictory function of the Wildlife Week Celebration 2006 was held on October 30, 2006 at the K J P Assembly conference hall, Shillong. The week is being organized by the Wildlife Wing of the Forest and Environment Department, Government of Meghalaya. Meghalaya Chief Secretary, Mr. S K Tiwari graced the occasion as the chief in the presence of the Principal Secretary, Forest Department, Mr. H Chinkhenthang, Commissioner & Secretary, Forest Department, Mr. L Roy, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest, Mr. V K Nautiyal and Chief Conservator of Forest (Wildlife), Mr. S Kumar.

In his brief speech, Mr. Tiwari said that the Wildlife Week celebration has been spread over the entire month, to honour the tradition of remembering the mega diversity of flora and fauna in the State. He further said that wildlife is part of the large web life, adding that danger to wildlife therefore is danger to the existence of life. He also informed that Meghalaya has been categorized as a repository of mega biodiversity and the conservation of the rich natural resource including wildlife is the central theme of all sustainable policies. He further stated that the biggest challenge is to strike balance between conservation and development, and to ensure that the precious wildlife is not lost due to deforestation and consequent depletion of wildlife habitat.

Other who spoke on the occasion were Principal Secretary, Forest Department, Mr. H Chinkhenthang, Commissioner & Secretary, Forest Department, Mr. L Roy, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest, Mr. V K Nautiyal and Chief Conservator of Forest (Wildlife), Mr. S Kumar.

Later, M. Tiwari handed over the prize to students of various school who took part in various competition organized by the Forest and Environment Department, Shillong.
