AWARENESS PROGRAMME ON VOTER ENROLMENT HELD

With an aim to generate awareness on voter enrolment, the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer, Meghalaya today organised an awareness programme in connection with the commencement of the Special Summary Revision of Electoral Rolls with January 1, 2017 as the effective date at the Meghalaya Bharat Scouts & Guides Hall in the city. Speaking to the gathering of school students, youths and women groups, Chief Electoral Officer, Meghalaya, F.R Kharkongor stated that the awareness camp was aimed at encouraging the left out group comprising school students, Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) turning 18 on or before January 1, 2017, and others to get themselves enrolled as voters in line with the motto of the Election Commission of India for 2016 ‘No voter to be left behind’. He also informed that the Election Department is focussing on enrolment in certain pockets across the state having huge left out voters through the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) Programme. He urged upon all the citizens wishing to enrol as well as those desiring to make corrections or deletions to furnish proper documents in support of their claims and objections to ensure an error free Electoral Roll, scheduled for final publication on January 10, 2017. “Enrol to vote, then only you can have a stake in the developmental process of the state”, he said further while encouraging the youths gathered at the awareness camp to enrol themselves as voters. Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer, East Khasi Hills District, P.S Dkhar meanwhile expressed hope that more people get themselves enrolled as voters and called upon those with claims and objections to do so within October 2016 to ensure that correct entries are made into the final Electoral Roll.

GOVERNOR ATTENDS CPC ANNUAL GET TOGETHER FUNCTION

The Central Puja Committee’s annual “Get-Together of Harmony” function was held today at M.J Tower, Morellow Compound, Shillong. Meghalaya Governor, Shri V. Shanmuganathan graced the function as Chief Guest and Mr. Justice Dinesh Maheshwari, Chief Justice, High Court of Meghalaya as Guest of Honour. The programme organised by the Pragati Sangha Sarbajanin Durga Puja Committee (PSSDPC), Shillong. Addressing the gathering, the Governor said he is pained to see young mothers being abandoned by their husbands and who have to fend for the children. “No mother should live in distress nor should they experience the pain of loneliness, we have to unite and take this responsibility so that there are no more abandoned mothers in the State,” he said. The Governor also said that the purpose of the annual get together it is to extend the hand of friendship to everyone without hostility and also to spread the feeling of unity and oneness. Chief Justice, High Court of Meghalaya, Mr Justice Dinesh Maheshwari also spoke on the occasion. Earlier, the Governor accompanied by the religious leaders of different faiths lighted the ceremonial lamp and led the gathering in the All Faith Prayer. The Governor also presented the CPC’s ‘Sarad Sanman’ Award to Shri Ram Gopal Agarwal, a Social Worker. Also during the programme, the founder member of the PSSDPC, Shri S. C. Nag was felicitated by the Chief Justice, High Court of Meghalaya, Mr Justice Dinesh Maheshwari. Smt Roshan Warjri, Health and Family Welfare Minister, Dr M. Ampareen Lyngdoh, Information and Public Relations Minister, Mr Justice V. P. Vaish, Judge, High Court of Meghalaya, Dr. Jemino Mawthoh, MLA and Shri Manas Chaudhuri, former Minister was also present at the get together function. Other highlights of the function include inauguration of the Diamond Jubilee celebration of the PSSDPC, presentation of songs and cultural programmes.
