R.C LALOO DISTRIBUTES POWER TILLERS

Shillong, November 01, 2011: Meghalaya Minister of Soil and Water Conservation, Education etc, Dr. R.C. Laloo, distributed Power Tillers and Sprayer to the villages of Madur, Phlongingkhaw, Lumkhudung and Niriang on October 31, 2011.

A total of seven Power Tillers were distributed to the villages, two each at Madur, Phlongingkhaw, Niriang and one at Lumkhudung. The Divisional Soil & Water Conservation Officer, Jaintia Hills (T) Division, Jowai D. Challam informed that besides the other Schemes already in progress in the District, the Department distributed power tillers to help the farmers in their cultivation especially during winter. He also informed that the total cost of one Power Tiller is Rs. 1, 56, 825 and earnestly requested the village headmen to make use of the tillers in a proper way that will benefit all residents of the village.

Dr. R.C.Laoo, in his speech, encouraged the people to practice multi-cropping and to take proper care of the Tillers handed to them for farming Purpose.

Later, the Minister also inaugurated the Water Tank at Mihmyntdu Riatsliya locality.

WORKSHOP ON DETECTION OF FAKE CURRENCY NOTES

Shillong, November 01, 2011: The State Bank of India organized a Workshop on Detection of Fake Currency Notes at the District Library, Jaintia Hills District, Jowai on 28th October, 2011.

While inaugurating the Workshop, Mr. T Dkhar, Deputy Commissioner, Jaintia Hills District stressed on the need to sensitize the people and enabling them to distinguish a fake note from a genuine one especially in the wake of reported circulation of fake notes in the District. He informed that the Bankers’ District Consultative Committee (DCC) meeting, of which he is the Chairman, had decided to have this Workshop with the help of experts from the Reserve Bank of India.

Mr. K Medhi, Assistant General Manager, Reserve Bank of India, Guwahati was the Resource Person in the workshop. A large number of officials from the State Government, the Banks and the Police Department in Jaintia Hills District, besides some traders in Jowai, attended the Workshop.

CLOSING CEREMONY OF WILDLIFE WEEK CELEBRATION

Shillong, November 01, 2011: Wildlife Week Celebration, organized by Department of Forest & Environment East & West Garo Hills Wildlife Division, Tura, came to a close at Trinity Secondary School, Williamnagar, on 31st October 2011.

Pravin Bakshi, Deputy Commissioner, East Garo Hills, in his speech as the Chief Guest, expressed his concern about the present scenario and the disappearance of different species of animals in the region. While making a mentioned that animals listed in endangered species are slowly becoming extinct for which the department is concerned, Mr. Bakshi called upon the people to preserve and conserve wildlife. He further called upon the youth to spread to others the message of conserving and protection of wild life and habitat in our region.

T Wanniang, MFS & DFO, Social Forestry Division, Williamnagar, while giving his introductory speech appealed to the general public, NGOs, students and others to join hands in preservation of wildlife which is already sensitive and fragile. He also highlighted the provisions of rules and regulations in the different Acts and Policies in connection with the conservation and protection of wildlife. Preservation of wildlife needs active participation from the public especially the youth, he said.

Addressing the gathering, W G Momin, former DFO, spoke about the relation and interdependence of man with nature and wildlife. He further mentioned about the mistakes that man had committed in the past. It is man who had destroyed the habitat, food and corridors of elephants in our area, he stated.

Project Manager, MRDS, P R Marak commented on the importance of wildlife and conservation by citing examples of preservation of fish sanctuaries at Rombagre and Nengmandalgre in Williamnagar which not only preserves nature but provides opportunities to earn a living for villagers.

Others present on the occasion are C A Sangma, ACF, Wildlife Division, Tura, Principal Trinity Secondary school, teachers and school students of various schools of Williamnagar.

Drawing and Painting competition, Extempore speech were also conducted during the week long program. Chief Guest distributed the prizes to the winners of these competitions.

SCHOOL BUILDING INAUGURATED

Shillong, November 01, 2011: The Chief Adviser to the Government of Meghalaya and local MLA, Dr. D D Lapang inaugurated the school building of Seiborlang Upper Primary School of Umrang Nongbah, Ri Bhoi District on October 31, 2011. The building was constructed under SSA Scheme 2009-10 at the cost of Rs. 6.18 lakhs.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Lapang said that education is necessary for all children and parents should understand the value of education and they should encourage their children to attend school. Stating that education eradicates poverty, ignorance and ill health of the society, Dr. Lapang encouraged the village elders and the school management to launch the Secondary classes in the village so that they can provide the urgent needs of their children. He expressed hoped that the building would cater to the needs of the students of the village. He also urged the village authority to work hard and to properly utilize the schemes and projects granted by the government for the betterment of the people.

Later, Dr. Lapang attended a short meeting which was held at the school to discuss on matters relating to the launching of the secondary classes at Umrang Nongbah village. In a meeting, 13 members were selected as members of the Managing Committee. Dr. Lapang said that quality education is a must for every child he therefore, called upon the village authority to induct qualified teachers into the school so that the quality of education and teachings are at par with other schools. Lastly, the village authority and the new Managing Committee have decided to introduce Class IX and Class X from the next academic year.
