HOME MINISTER INSPECT ROADS TO EASE TRAFFIC CONGESTION

Meghalaya Minister for Home etc., Mr. H D R Lyngdoh today inspected different roads in and around the city of Shillong with an aim to find ways and means to ease traffic congestion. Mr. Lyngdoh was accompanied by the Director General of Police, Mr. W R Marbaniang, Mrs. R V Suchiang, Commissioner & Secretary, Home (Police), Mr. D P Wahlang, Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills District, Mr. W L Lyngdoh, Chief Executive Officer, Shillong Municipal Board, Mr. Latho Manik Syiem, Syiem of Hima Mylliem and other senior police officials and officials from the PWD, PHE and Urban Affairs.

Speaking to press persons after the inspection, Mr. Lyngdoh said that some portion of the roads in the National Highway has to be widened and need to be improved for the benefit of the people at large. He also informed that the State Government is planning to re-route all vehicles plying from Police Bazar to Polo to ply behind the old Meghalaya Legislative Assembly building via Earle Holiday Home to Polo Towers, adding that the master plan for the project has been made and the gift deed will be signed after the formalities is completed and the construction will take place accordingly.

He also lamented that the traffic congestion in Iewduh area is extreme, adding that the area is a public nuisance area. He also said that he had requested the PWD, Syiem of Mylliem and Municipal to make arrangement to do away with the encroachment of the hawkers on the roadside.

He also informed that the State Level Committee on Traffic Congestion, set up in 2003 under the Chairmanship of the then Home Minister, Mr. R G Lyngdoh, will be revived again under his Chairmanship for the benefit and the welfare of the people at large.

He also informed that “No Tolerance Week” would also be launched and urged upon the people to work together so that the purpose is a success. He further informed that after the launching of the Week, the police would identify checkpoints to check that all vehicles comply with the rules and regulation laid down by the Government such as un entitled use of tinted glasses, over loading of Public Service Vehicles, embarkment and disembarkment of taxis and passengers among others.
