LEPROSY CASE DETECTION CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED

Meghalaya Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Shri. A. L Hek, released a bunch of colourful balloons to mark the launch of the Leprosy Case Detection Campaign for East Khasi Hills and Ri Bhoi District today at the premises of Civil Hospital, Shillong. The programme was organised by the National Leprosy Eradication Programme, Meghalaya. The Leprosy Case Detection campaign is a unique initiative under the National Leprosy Eradication Programme (NLEP). The objective of the Campaign is the early detection and generating awareness about leprosy, so that the person affected can be saved from physical disability and deformity by providing timely treatment and thus halting the transmission of the disease at the community level. Speaking on the occasion, Shri. A. L. Hek called all present to be ambassadors of the campaign such that the objectives of the campaign are achieved. Stating that two week is too short a period for health workers to reach out to each and everyone, Shri. Hek stressed on the need for cooperation from the society, at all levels, so that leprosy can be eradicated from the State. Delivering the keynote address, Dr. M. Marbaniang, State Leprosy Officer informed that the state of Meghalaya has an average of 20 to 30 cases annually which includes new cases and cases under treatment. Amongst these, cases with grade 11 disabilities have been detected which indicates that cases are being detected late or there are untreated cases which lie undetected. Prizes were also distributed to the winners of the essay completion held for the class 9 students of Holy Child Secondary School.

PROHIBITORY ORDER

The Additional Deputy Commissioner, I/c Pynursla Civil Sub-Division, Pynursla has issued an Order under Section 144 CrPC prohibiting any person, organization, etc. from indulging in or resorting to the act of poisoning of rivers, streams or any water bodies with the explicit or implicit intention to cause wide spread/large scale destruction of aquatic life within the Pynursla Civil Sub-Division. The order is necessitated in view of the reports received that large scale poisoning of rivers, streams and other water bodies is taking place within the Sub-Division and the use of chemical and biological substance upon water bodies has resulted in large scale extermination of fishes and other aquatic organism there upon and such poisoning of aquatic bodies has endangered the local indigenous fishes, flora and fauna besides undermining the local ecology. Moreover, the use of toxins/poisons in rivers and streams can pose a serious health hazard to human life, flora and fauna alike and the poisoning of water bodies has resulted in huge economic loss to the local economy and population since the short term gains of the few unscrupulous elements has upset the long term economic interest/well being of the general public and the unrelenting practice of this clandestine act of wanton destruction can result in unprecedented law and order problem within the Sub-Division. The order will come into force with immediate effect.

65TH ALL INDIA COOPERATIVE WEEK CELEBRATION

The office of the Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Meghalaya and the Meghalaya Cooperative Apex Bank Ltd., Shillong in collaboration with all the State Level Cooperative Federations will be celebrating the 65th All India Cooperative Week from 14th – 20th November, 2018. On 14th November at East Khasi Hills, on 15th November at Jaintia Hills, on 16th November at Ri Bhoi, on 19th November at South Garo Hills and West Garo Hills and on 20th November at East Garo Hills and West Khasi Hills.

NOTIFICATION

The Government of Meghalaya has renamed the Sericulture & Weaving Department as the Department of Textiles, Government of Meghalaya with immediate effect. Henceforth, all communications/correspondences etc. shall be addressed accordingly. This was informed by the Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya, Department of Textiles.
